Unbelievable loading times part 3

In the previous post i actually got a suggestion to upgrade to PS5 to remove the issues with the loading times. ARE YOU SERIOUS!? You actually think that the solution is to pay hundreds of euros to fix something that should be fixed by Funcom? And yes, thralls protect you when you teleport but they can not always be taken along. There are also times when you don’t yet have a thrall. These are not proper solutions to the problem in any way.

And other thing, people suggest that the problem is with the internet connection or the server and that is not the case. It’s the same on every server and my connection is solid 100mb cable. It’s obvious that the game has been updated so much it doesn’t run properly on PS4 anymore. And that kinda sucks since it’s a PS4 game. I was thinking of switching to a SSD but to pay that amount of money just because this one game doesn’t perform as it should… Insane.

Pretty sure it’s a PC game actually, and NOT a PS4 game. And yeah, sounds right to me: When your hardware ain’t cutting it that’s when you need to start considering new and better hardware. Typically the only time games optimize for uber weak or outdated HW is when they decide to develop for mobile - phones and tablets or wanna run it in a browser maybe.

The game is definitely not optimized for the generation of consoles that it was initially ported to. That happens as games continue to grow. The PS5 still has availability issues in many places, and isn’t always an option besides, but at least it has significant backwards compatibility.

The need to upgrade systems is a reality in the modern era. If the game is still growing, eventually it will outgrow what it once ran comfortably on. However, that’s not always financially reasonable for each player. Likewise many of our modern gadgets have planned obsolescence baked into them.

Having an SSD card will help performance on other games as well. Likewise, and this one was incredulous at first, a thorough cleaning of the PS4 sometimes helps, especially with the choppiness and the occasion sounds reminiscent of an airplane taking off. Both of these stop gaps can help. Who knows if they will be enough after 3.0 drops.

But still somehow every other game that i own works just fine after numerous updates and improvements. Even from an external HDD. Go figure.

Oh and it’s not just about the loading times. The game doesn’t run properly at all, constant low fps and lagging to the point that the game is unplayable. That’s something that is not acceptable now matter how the games develop over time.

Well, you do know that the inner portions of an HDD platter can be 8 or 10 times slower than the outer areas, right? And that’s user addressable - you can effect change… it’s a pain but doable.

It used to be a fairly standard practice to short-stroke drives in order to get even performance levels out of it. Typically the inner 30 to 40% of the drive wasn’t formatted or was formatted with a partition for the purpose of long term low traffic storage. In the case of PS4 you would probably want to put the larges games on the outer areas and the smallest games on the innermost sectors.

I hear that sometimes here on the forums. But everytime I visit Twitch and watch a recent PS4 recording it seems perfectly acceptable to me.

Could it be that you need to open the machine, clean it well, reapply the thermal paste and replace any thermal pads?

If you want Funcom to continue to advance the game but retain everything it did before…YES! PC gamers understand this concept very well…upgrading is required for any game that continues to advance for extended amounts of time. You are complaining that a game that is still being actively developed should work on a system that is 9 years old and be comparable to systems that are less than a year old. Seriously. This is what you are telling us has to happen…I mean eventually they just need to put out the disclaimer that it no longer functions on PS4, X1 systems and start pushing out PS5 and Xbox X rebranded discs. But no…they shouldn’t have to wait till you feel it worthwhile to upgrade. The game runs significantly better on a PS5 like it’s a brand new game. I highly recommend the switch and don’t fault the company for advancing the game. That is the fix. I would be quite upset if they limited their game’s advancement because some folks feel that it’s gotta run perfectly on a decade old system.

@LostBrythunian
I couldn’t say it better, just couldn’t, you whole post represents me too.
I will just add…
It’s a pc game that released on consoles too like @TeleTesselator said …
My first download in this game was something more 70 giga now maybe 140?
Pc gamers “suffer” the console add in this game :man_shrugging:, it’s holding it “back”.
YES, upgrading to ps5 is the only solution to enjoy this game for the next years, yet this is not Funcoms fault, it’s only ours fellow exile @Koschgine.
The game has to go in front and it does. When we had the money we didn’t have consoles. Now that consoles are a bit available, our lifes cost is double…
Story of my life :rofl::rofl::rofl:.

I can sympathize with the game growing beyond what ps4 is capable of, I really can. I think at some point the game for ps4 will have to be frozen (I’m not a dev, its just my hunch). The gaming industry has just changed in that games are more continually developed over a long time and not just “buy cartridge/disc, game done”. So in a way, I would encourage console players to consider that while your current issues are with CE, its likely going to be with many more games as time goes on.

And I have to say that outside of the few very bumpy starts of console updates in the beginning, FC has been very good and ensuring both PC and consoles are enjoying the game. I’m looking forward to the Controller updates that Nicole mentioned in the trailer.

Really? I run the game off an el’cheap-o 5400 RPM HDD and it’s great!

And I develop using both UE4 and UE5 installed on the same drive. Smooth as silk, no problems whatsoever.

CE Game load times between that and when the game was installed on my 2GB M.2 Enterprise NVMe only differ by 12 seconds. ~=shrug=~

For me it’s not just a hunch, I am sure of it. If ps4 is now barely performing, I don’t have to be a specialist to understand that the 3.0 update will be devastating :man_shrugging:. The good news, everything is attached to your account, not your machine, so ps5 is a mandatory if I want to enjoy my best game , or a pc :rofl::rofl:. Maybe it’s time after all to see my dark side my friend @darthphysicist. @drachenfeles promised cookies too :rofl::rofl:.

Wow, I thought the Barracuda line was the fast 7200 rpm, I guess a lot has changed since I’ve looked at HDDs. :man_shrugging:

There are 7200 cudas. And 10,000 RPM one’s too.

Those are great for racks on cement floors. If you’re on wooden floors 7200 is iffy and you would want to avoid 10k rpm drives. 5400 is perfect for the home!

I find it so weird that in PC gaming, we are expected to update our machines to get better performance as games get more powerful. But in console land, its considered heresy.

Still the cost factor of PC gaming vs consoles make me a console player. I was in the rat race of PC gaming back in the 90’s and early 2000’s but it got really expensive and I was tired of constantly upgrading the PC. Eventually I changed my PoV and I think this mem,e below, I ran into last year explains my PoV now.

Yup, diminishing results, it doesn’t scale linearly. ~=shock=~

Yeah I understand the value of console… but I also know my ps2 games are not getting updates…

Build your own PC for $1600.

Play on full cinematic settings at 4k resolutions. Only shadows needs to be toned down. Lower FOV setting makes everything look amazing. Higher FOV setting still looks nice and lets you see a lot of the world.

A curved Ultra Wide monitor would likely make this game even nicer.

Money does not grow on trees, but you can save for a few months or work some over-time and have a stash of cash ready for when the next big sale comes around. Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc.

Guess it would blow their mind to learn that I upgraded my NES to accept 2GB of storage recently.

I doubt it will be for long. Not only will you need to upgrade to a PS5 for just performance, but when they eventually drop support for PS4, you’ll need to upgrade simply to continue playing. Much like FFXIV did to the PS3 (and I believe will be doing as well to the PS4 before long).

I would hazard a guess the only reason the PS4 is still supported right now is because of the COVID/Crypto mess that caused a delay in chips being developed. Now all that is behind us. Support is going to evolve going forward. I give PS4 about 6-9 months of support left. So either upgrade, or enjoy the laggy experience for that time and then sunset to another game.

Welcome to video gaming. A hobby that isn’t really one of the cheaper ones.
