One of my clan members is out harvesting npcs for unblemished meat, and when he returns and places it in the Pit of Yog all but 3 per stack disappear.
They probably decayed.
It is the catch-up system malfunctioning, the exact same thing as when a station instantly completes a stack of whatever - only this is the bad version of that.
