So I am confused, I think that the “wipe” argument is ignorant, and it seems you do also.
Also. Funcom is going to do what Funcom wants to do, I do not see them “shifting” revenue because someone that has played their game for a year screams for them to do it on a forum.
Lastly, I agree with you that private servers are for exactly that.
Just do not get so grumpy about it.
I still don’t see how you would feel attacked because as I pointed out, no single group of players deserve any more attention than any other. shrugs Doesn’t matter, I’ll give you extra attention!
Since most of this thread is regarding Official PvP servers, I do not have a stake in those servers.
I would say vote “no” to wipe active servers ( PvE / PvE-C servers). I currently still play on a PvE official server. I gave up on PvE-C Official server and blew up my property and killed all but 1 of my followers. (My clan mate took my follower I left behind).
I agree with the post that active servers should not change their rule settings to wipe. Servers that are new or pretty much dead that are reorganized as Periodic wipe servers would make sense.
For historical point of view in regards to my private server, I did a wipe on Dec 2019, which super majority people voted in favor of it. And oddly enough those who voted for it, most quit the game/server within days of the wipe. So, a wipe could potentially kill a server as well. Granted this was a PvE-C server at the time not a PvP server. Also we did have some server stability issues when we did the vote to fix an issue which ended up being a bugged placeable that was discovered a couple weeks later.
For PvP servers, I have no opinion since it would not effect me one way or the other.
Another thought about periodic wipes. A new player who joins the game / server in the final month, will not really have much incentive to play much since the server will wipe soon. If I started a server where I learned it will wipe in 3 weeks, I would probably hold off playing and wait for the server to start over. So an influx of players for certain months in the year will become non-existent. (The month before a wipe - which is 4 months in a year).
Sounds reasonable, unless you’re one of the few people still playing on those servers. Unless you can objectively prove no one has logged into a server for two weeks, its not “dead.”
If they ever did decide to create wipe servers, I would honestly hope it was implemented on a new server and folks knew what was up going in.
True, although Funcom will have the data on that so they can easily tell a server is truly dead. Then they can just make the server change to wipe server (not sure why 3 months though, seems way to short in either case)
A player coming back after 2 weeks, will not have a base anyway so nothing lost. (Followers may be a different story). They do not like the idea, can always move to a non-wipe server.
Granted people keep saying there are dead servers, I am not sure there is many or any truly dead servers. It is not that hard to check though if someone has the time.
Actually I just checked and the second lowest ranked / active server has had some activity this week. So all the servers but 1 had at least 1 player on recently. The lowest rank did not have anyone in 7 days. Below is the 2nd lowest ranked server for activity. This is only based on USA servers. I did not look at other regions.
There’s always a bit of a paradox with these threads about server wipes.
If servers are dead, there should be a ton of building space. But usually players wanting wipes are wanting them because much of the real estate they want is taken by what they deem as ‘inactive’ players.
Here’s the problem with that. If you wipe the servers you remove the only tether those players have. Why would they continue to login once a week to keep their stuff if their stuff is gone? There is absolutely zero evidence (and let me tell you, private server owners/admins have alot of experience with this) that wipes will bring in entirely new players and fresh blood to the game.
To put it shortly, no on is sitting on the steam store page checking in every so often to see if the servers wiped, waiting to buy the game when they do.
But lets do a hypothetical. Lets say those players who don’t login much, actually don’t quit and use the wipe as an excuse to build something new (possible, right? I mean I would do this myself). Within 24 hours, they would be sprawled across the map and going back to logging in every so often to refresh their builds.
Contrary to popular belief it doesn’t take much to rebuild (sorry to those making arguments about losing alot of work, you’re really not, most of your builds could be done in less than a week). Which means these peoples’ reasons for wiping would only give them a respite from the issue they want to fix for a very short amount of time. Could even make it worse, if it doesn’t kill the server like explained before.
No. Wiping is not the solution to ANY of the problems listed above in this thread.
Let me tell you, the only time you want to wipe is for two reasons only. The first one isn’t even applicable to Officials. As if you have a community that wants to as a community switch to another map. Maybe they want to do a few months together on Siptah, or a custom map. There’s no reason for Officials to do this. If you want Siptah, you have official Siptah servers. If you want custom, well officials aren’t for you as that’s modded content.
The other reason is for server performance. If the server databases are experiencing enough corruption that can’t be cleaned out, then you have no choice. To my knowledge, officials don’t really have this problem. This only really affects modded servers running mods with unclean database practices. And coupled with a server being 70/70 for longer periods of time.
So since neither of those reasons apply in this argument within this thread. Wipes are not needed, and could cause more problems or exacerbate the problems already brought up.
What you all should be focusing on is looking at servers who have a large amount of tethered players who only login once a while and coming up with solutions to get them online and playing again. That’s where the solution is, and that is where the discussion should be.
To not have a desire to do this is just being selfish and wanting prime building spots. Which I’d gather is the purpose of this thread in the beginning. I’m not calling the OP and others selfish, I’m sure they’re not. But their motivations are, and they are trying to justify it. What everyone needs to do is step back and really analyze this issue and take the wisdom and experience of private server owners who have a very indepth and intimate relationship with wiping servers.
My desire for a server that wipes on a scheduled basis is about recapturing that first month feel. As others have noted, when a new pvp server launches, that beginning rush as all the players are competing for the limited resources is an fun experience. Yes players can immediately rush to their preferred base location but it takes them time to build to T3. Those players that manage to find a T4 thrall at the beginning find themselves in both the advantage of having the thrall, and as a mark for others who don’t. At time goes on this chaos settles down into a much slower pace. When a reset server has a good community that all enjoy that early game chaos, this new map experience can be repeated over and over. In addition, when a server is about to be reset, usually players go all out in destroying everyone else they can.
Yes there are PVP players who do not prefer this short form style and enjoy the late game experience more then the early game experience. That is why I am against implementing it game wide as it would take away from the experience of those players who want to build a kingdom over time.
So far the most compelling argument I have seen against implementing wipe servers is Multigun’s point that it would divert revenue to a specific subset of player’s (who do have the option of private servers) and not benefit the community as a whole.
Certain players would not be calling for a wipe system if Funcom just added content consistently (events, holidays, dungeons, bosses).
This has been my argument from the start.
I have given up though. Upon making a post about it, I discovered that most players not only don’t want a wipe, they don’t want any content at all to be added.
They have rejected the suggestion of new maps and holiday events.
I am at a loss. It’s like players want the game to die.
You mean the topic where most people agreed with many of your suggestions, but they didn’t like the idea of wipes and microtransactions? The one you can’t stop complaining about incessantly, because not everyone agreed with everything you said? That one?
Players are entitled to their opinions and more importantly, the style of play they want.
As I stated before, what purpose would wipes actually serve on official? The appeal of Officials (not one I enjoy by the way) is that they are stable in the fact that the creation you made literally 1200 days ago, is still there (assuming you refresh it).
Take that away, and you have a server set that is very much like private servers but no mods. Why would you do that? Why take away the work someone literally spent the last three and a half years working on, with the expectation it will be there for as long as they want it to?
Take my advice. Play private servers (and I am not being facetious here… I play on them myself). Find one with the wipe cycle you enjoy. Find one with content you want to try. There possibilities are endless. If you don’t want to be constrained by REH lore, then find one with elves, catgirls, or whatever. Hell I’ve even seen Warcraft and Warhammer themed servers. Many have their own cobbled together lore based on their own creations. If you want holiday events, they have those in spades.
You are bound to find something you like. And you’ll get one without the issue of hackers, cheaters, and foundation spammers. Private servers have 100x stronger and more efficient tools that Funcom has no access to (they could, if they only used Pippi… just saying).
Sure admin abuse is a possibility (but extremely low in my experience, mileage varies). But if you’re looking for a server with rolling wipes every few months, then when you experience this, its no skin off your back to just jump ship and find something else. Its no different than a PVP server getting wiped out by a group of hackers, or a PVE server getting spammed out. However its less prevalent. Especially on the higher population servers (can’t build decent communities with crap admins afterall).
But I will warn you. If you bring baggage with you. If you have a poor attitude, then any problems you are having WILL follow you. I’ve seen this many times across many servers and many games. Players who have dirty attitudes tend to always find faults in others. These players love to throw shade at servers or companies that the majority somehow don’t have any issues with. Don’t be one of those. Don’t take my advice if you’re going to do this. Don’t give my fellow server admins out there a headache. That’s all I ask (this goes for anyone reading this).
No, I haven’t. I’m one of those who agreed with many of your points. You do know that you don’t need to lie in order to have a discussion, right? Especially when it’s trivial to prove that you’re lying. Here are the people agreeing with you:
Nobody is trying to drive you away, either from the game or the forums. If you can’t participate without spreading misinformation or playing victim, that’s your problem.
