What's the argument for why target lock and auto-facing on attack should off?

The specific context is on a PvP server. People are asking why most private pvp servers these days have it configured off but I don’t have a good answer.

Because target lock and auto-facing make the game too easy. Most players want the challenge of having to actually aim at your target rather than the computer doing it for you. In skill combat (especially PvP), you want as much skill requirement as possible when facing off against a human opponent.

Hell no. I left pc for ps5. To much hacking

This is an interesting topic.

Some PVP servers turn it off because they believe it gives an advantage.

Some PVP servers turn it off because they believe it is a crutch that builds bad habits.

Some PVP (maybe some PVE too) servers turn it off because they believe it contributes to load on the server.

Some servers (PVP or PVE) turn it off because there is a bug that causes you to lock on when going from First Person View to Third Person view. (Not sure if this still happens, it was happening in Chapter 1)

I don’t do PvP, but to be honest, I don’t use it because I find it to be more of a hindrance than a help. I want to be able to change targets in an instant, fire a cleaving attack at angles not directly aimed at one opponent and observe the whole battlefield. Locking my screen onto one target is just tunnel vision and causes trouble more often than not.

Yes, it means sometimes my attacks will miss, but so what? That’s on me, and just means I need to aim better the next time.

Yeah, Dagger spam was the main reason I was aware of but some of the other people in the conversation said that dagger spam with target lock was easy to counter.

Mostly I just think people should learn to fight without a built in crutch, but I get that some people with disabilities play the game.

I hate the auto relock. Drop an enemy, fawn is too close :eyes:

Maybe you could have chosen your words more carefully, but I don’t think the position itself was problematic.

Calling them sissy’s is definitely problematic though. You should probably avoid doing that.

Short answer: as has been mentioned above, Dagger Spam.

Longer answer:

In a competitive sense, there is a desire to reward skill. However, not all connections are equal. It isn’t just gear variances, it’s also how much lag there is, what the latency is, the ping, ect ect ect.
In cases where connectivity goes a bit sidewise, especially for multiple parties, there is an advantage to being able to just keep hitting the button and trusting the system to guide one’s attacks. Somewhat more reliable than not having that auto lock.

That said, the auto lock is sorta meh. It prioritizes the oddest things (at no point will teh kitteh in the camp be this one’s priority for attack rolls) and even then, some attacks will still just miss for little discernable reason at the time. Yes, dagger Spam, but also seeing the dagger combo miss a few hits against a dragon is sorta funny. How in the cluck did someone miss a camper van they were practically climbing? Likewise, this one has had Shortsword combos miss a couple hits to the target this one was hypothetically locked on to. The linear quick stab combo. How that misses one of the middle hits is beyound the pale. To say nothing of how badly it impacts attempts to roll dodge or maneuver in combat.

So, medium answer, because dagger spam and because it’s janky as cluck anyway.

It still requires skill to mash that dagger spam. It keeps the game fun for those who really need it. I doubt it will change (target lock stays). Auto-facing is random at times, so still requires skill to aim on top of that.

I understand that some players want ultra hard mode and nothing stopping them from applying their skill to make it fun.

I mean, is someone getting bullied here while target lock and auto-facing is on?

[note: try the xbox controller on the pc and try the difference between joystick and keys.]
