5 Ideas to Improve the Game

I dont know how many more times we as a community have to go over this, but I will restate what Funcom has already made abundantly clear: Maprooms and Obelisks arent going anywhere, and the games fhe games fast-travel system is NOT going to be removed! Forget it and move on, because its not to happen.

MAPROOMS AREN’T GOING ANYWHERE

This was a statement issued by Robert during the Community Mailbag developer stream on the 10th October.

Twitch Comment: Are you planning on expanding the map when the mounts are implemented or remove the maprooms ? What are the thoughts on that ?

Robert: Maprooms will not be removed and expanding the map won’t happen. Mounts will be very valuable but no, we won’t all of a sudden do something like level the unnamed city to make room for a huge plains. Personally, I was really worried about the more craggier landscapes, but honestly, horse-riding in the desert turned out to work great.

You all can find it here in Multigun’s Dev Stream recap.

And I say thank goodness that common sense prevailed on this issue. I like many other players am EXTREMELY limited in the amount of time I get play each week. I am lucky if I get to play for a few hours on saturday and a few hours on sunday, and that is on a good week! And I dont want to be spending half of that time walking from one end of the map to the other and back again. No thankyou, I would rather decide for myself which mode of transport I will take. Also bear in mind that the Maproom and Obelisks are tied to several of the games Journey Steps. People should and will continue to have the option to choose their own playstyle. As I always say:

The option which presents more options is usually the better option.

Above is the OP on this topic, and I agree with the poster who pointed out that many of us as professional people have VERY limited time to play CE, which makes the idea that you could call to your home base maproom from any other maproom an excellent idea. (Perhaps with the omission of PvP servers, where that would give undo advantage?)

doesn’t mean someone can;t express there opinion on it. It is called suggestions. Just like mounts were never going to come in to the game. But after enough threads and some serious looking at how they could impact the game in their vision, they rethought it. Maybe we can get an admin setting. That is all some people would like. but if we stay silent, then Funcom won’t know that there are players who prefer a more immersive experience when it come to traveling the map.

Except for the one in the Unnamed city. I’ve always found that sad. As the original map - it should shine brighter than all the others. You should be able to use it, but at a cost. A fragment of power per use sounds reasonable.

Autonomy and Freedom of choice are critical to our well being, and choice is critical to freedom and autonomy. Nonetheless, though modern Americans have more choice than any group of people ever has before, and thus, presumably, more freedom and autonomy, we don’t seem to be benefiting from it psychologically.

— quoted from Ch.5, The Paradox of Choice , 2004

I don’t think you’ll have an easy time applying “The Paradox of Choice” to sandbox games

Removing maps and obelisks and leaving the rest of the game as-is would not make the game more about survival. It would just make it more tedious.

Honest question: have you continued your “let’s play PVE” experiment? If you have, I would be interested in hearing what you think about PVE experience. I imagine that PVP feels more like a survival game because there’s actually something challenging you all the time – other players.

My experience with PVE(-C) has been that it’s not too hard to get to level 60 and once you’re there, you just invent your own challenges. Literally invent them. “Wouldn’t it be cool to build a jousting arena?” “I wonder if I can get a lvl 20 Snowhunter with perks X, Y and Z.”

I remember asking a question about the purpose of the Purge that was answered in one dev stream and the answer was that it’s supposed to be a challenge for players. As far as ideas go, that’s a pretty good one, but it’s not working out too well. A solo player can’t get a Purge without resorting to tricks like leaving your toon logged in overnight. So you need a clan and virtually all PVE incentives are stacked against clanning. And if you happen to have a clan and can get a Purge, then you better hope you don’t get a buggy one that spawns inside your base for no good reason, or spawns inside the terrain and you can’t interact with it, or half of it dies in lava, etc.

So what exactly am I supposed to look forward to in PVE endgame? Where’s the fun? From what I can see, it’s mostly building and collecting (thralls, legendary items, pets, journey steps, whatever).

When it comes to building, removing the obelisks will just make building more of a chore, not really a challenge. And it will make servers more toxic, because now you have no quick way to get past the fortress that xXxDoucheCanoe69xXx clan built that blocks up the B10 passages from the desert to the Mounds and have to hope that SwastikasAreCool clan won’t block up the rest. (Which, by the way, isn’t against the rules, because they’re not really blocking access to resources, they’re just making you go a looooong way around.)

When it comes to collecting, removing obelisks might have positive effect on some aspects and negative on some others, but I’m willing to bet it won’t add any actual challenges.

If you want to add challenge, you might have to remove obelisks, but only after revamping several aspects of the game to actually make it challenging. And I’m willing to bet that those changes would have quite a large segment of the PVE playerbase up in arms about how the game isn’t a sandbox anymore. Hell, I bet you can even guess (but not in public, please) which forum poster I would consider the poster child for that kind of complaint

So yeah, nobody’s saying you can’t voice your opinion about obelisks, but you’re never going to get agreement from the majority of PVE players because either you’re suggesting to yank them out without any other changes, which would just make PVE more tedious without making it more interesting, or you’re suggesting a major overhaul away from Conan Minecraft, which would upset a whole lot of players who like Conan Minecraft

I dont like or feel the need to have horses in this game, so i dont use them.
If someone doesnt like or feel the need to have map and obilisks in this game, they dont have to use them.

As far as alters, purges and pve end game are concerned, there are several good ideas in this thread.

Again like every thing in this game, these could be toggleable for pve and pvp servers so that they are less likely to be exploitable.

Edit - wrong link. Fixed.

As a “pve offline mode” player, the game can be as challenging as you make it. Personally, I enjoy a challenge, thus all of my settings are set to 1, xp multipliers are set to 0.1 with the exception of xp for kills, which is set to 2.

The whole idea of setting up map rooms for teleportation to discovered areas is a reward for hours of farming and hunting. The pve offline player does not have the ability to travel in groups other than a pet or thrall, so you have to be prepared for intense battles.

What I would love to see in the game is to have a cart that could be pulled by a horse for materials.

The reason I dont use the drawbridge is because they look like they came out of a Fallout game.

Being able to choose the armor style you want and then put the bonus and heat/cold option you want would be really nice, lots of nice armors that I will never wear because of the wrong bonuses…Accuracy!!

Awesome idea!

+1 to that.

They are very good ideas, it seems to me that the weapons and armor of the dlc do not work, it would be good if they find a way to use them for pvp and that they are at the level of redeemed silence or champion armor.

Nope. Got bored once i realized i was right, and did not ever need to leave the Sept City Desert/brimstone lake area. Went back to PVP, where at least i have something pushing me to better myself on the game.

How?
Black ICE and Brimstone is the only thing you cannot get any wheres on the map. But it is so easy to mass grab, that making 1 journey can set you up for at least 1000 foundations easy. Sure wood, stone, and iron are tilted in some areas, but they are easily within reach in 99% of the areas to get what you need. Having obelisks allows people to constantly stock pile, which contributes to land claim spamming. Slowing down the building would not be a bad thing.

For PVE, again I think it would lead to a better society on officials. If I built by the black Ice, I could mass farm it. IF antoher person built by Brimstone Lake, they could mass farm it. Same with Iron, wood, stone etc. Then guess what, i reach out and meet you have way for a trade of mass resources. But I do forget the officials are really a bunch of SP who want to say they are part of a community, but don;t want to actually work as a community.

PVP, it would drive wars with a purpose. control black ice, brimstone regions. It would drive alliances where clans could pay with regional resources for help when they needed it. But again, a bunch of PVE players on those servers, who would rather offline an empty base, then to actually fight.

Every argument for map rooms and the fast travel really come from the SP mentality, and doesn’t look at how it removes/negates so much of possible game play from officials.

Look I know it is easier. I do it because I play PVP, and you have to be uber efficient to have a chance if you don;t play 8 hours a day. But that does not mean that sometime, it makes me feel like I am not actually playing the game, but just doing a job.
Right now on my PVP, I am playing solo. So I don’t have to be on for my clan. I am also doing as much map running vs quick travel so I can actually take in the environment, and enjoy my time. By playing solo, I can build more hidden, and at the same time am not getting attached to my belongings, but just enjoying the journey more getting the materials. And I have no responsibilities to clan mates (clans…the other issue with officials, esp. PVP). what I have found out is that i can get a lot of what I need from a very tight area no matter where I build. The only things i need to run the map for are like i said, black ice mainly. I haven’t even ran for to brim stone lake, as i can get that from thrall runs in sinners refuge, and I am not trying to make chests of dragon fire right now. Plus Steel from New Asagarth is building my base and supplying enough steel to do what a solo needs.

so all these just proves that fast travel is for mass farming, and mass farming is usually beneficial to spamming as many buildings as possible in a short time, or clans where 1 farmer can pretty much supply a clan of 5 players with all the mats they need. This in turn allow the other 4 to troll, play other games and only come when the event log dictates. And if all 5 are farming, well then you get the server lagging builds all over by one clan.

I’ve had long stints on three different PVE-C servers and a few much shorter stints on a few others and I can say from experience that your idea of a community is unnecessarily narrow.

PVE servers can – and often do – have a vibrant and fun community. It’s just not based around trade, the way you want it to be. The best PVE communities I’ve seen were those where there was always someone online ready to help other people:

  • New to the game? Don’t worry, we’ll help you learn the ropes.
  • New to the server? Welcome, holler if you need help with anything.
  • Died due to a stupid bug and cannot recover your stuff? Let me know what you lost, I’ve got loads of stockpiled stuff to help you get back on your feet.
  • Died in the middle of Warmaker’s and don’t have spare keys available? I’ll be right there, we’ll get your stuff.
  • You’re level 30 with a T2 base and you just got the announcement for the Cimmerian Berserker Purge? Don’t worry, a bunch of us are on our way to help you defend.

That’s a community. It’s not a competitive community, but it’s still a community, and I enjoy servers like that a lot.

Land claim spamming happens only when people are being prіcks. Massive builds are not the same thing as land claim spamming.

And as long as building and collecting are the only two endgame playstyles that the game offers incentive for, making building more tedious is not a good thing. As I keep saying, you wanna get rid of obelisks? I’m all for it, as long as it goes hand in hand with other measures to steer the PVE game away from Conan Minecraft. Otherwise you’re just saying “well, I don’t like that playstyle, so I think it should suck for everyone who does”

I  maprooms and obi’s.

Everyone minus me, so not everyone.

Point taken, I updated the reply

I cant help but laugh reading this. While I am itching to pull up a wall of text explaining why this sort of rationalism is pseudo logic, I wont. @CodeMage already made enough good points. We are discussing Maprooms and fast-travel in Conan Exiles. I am not going to be drawn into a broader philosophical debate surrounding peoples rights to freedom of choice. So sorry, but I am not going to bite. And I would urge you to be respectful and not to derail Indigo-Girls thread with it.

Never said you couldnt. I just didnt see the point in arguing for something which has now been flately ruled out on a couple of occasions. Its a dead issue to me. Even at its height it was very poorly recieved, with minimal support among the PvP playerbase, and its support was utterly non-existant among the PvE and Singleplayer bases. Its not worth removing an entire in-game mechanic to cater to a very niche demographic.

I) It was a lot of extra work in direct response to demands by the playerbase, to add it in in the first place. II) It is tied to a few Journey Steps which would need to be changed. III) People such as myself are VERY limited in the amount of time we get to play each week, often only a few hours, and we dont want to spend half of that playtime walking from one end of the map to the other and then back again IV) Players should be free to play the game the way they choose, including their means of travel. Which leads to my bottom line.

If you really find Maprooms and fast-travel to be that objectionable, I suggest that you gather some other like-minded players and set up a dedicated private server with hard rules against using them in place.

Oh my gosh, what on earth are you suggesting? that i fork out 50 bucks for 3 months to do this?! NO way man, No way! This needs to be implemented tomorrow or im leaving the game!

(sarcasm off)

I going to repeat myself , i like harder survival games , not pvp or easy mode MMOs. Lord knows weve got tons of those.

Hahaha! I got a nice laugh out of this. Anyone who knows me personally will tell you Im kind of a cynical and sarcastic blighter myself.

But this bit I dont understand what you are trying to convey. I am confused. A little help…?
