Chapter 3 New Combat is terrible

I mean that’s great (for you), but it is admittedly ridiculous. Just like it was ridiculous that you could quite literally knock rocknoses into outer space using a hammer. Is it worth getting super wound-up over? Nah. But it does need to be fixed.

I beg to differ. I’ve experienced it several times in game.

I don’t play PvP, so this is of no concern to me. That is why I focus on discussing the erratic behavior of monsters and NPCs.

Yeah, they definitely can pivot mid-charge. It looks like any NPC with a lunge/charge attack can turn towards you mid-attack; rhinos, crocodiles, etc. You see, they were upgraded with anti-grav packs…

Unfortunately, this tactic has simply been replaced with dodging once or twice backwards. You can’t dodge to the side or try to sidestep the enemies because they now have laser targeting. The only defense is to spam dodge. I’m sure that will become stale pretty fast.

EDIT: Also, the way that enemies can instantly turn to face an attack has nerfed one Agility-based perk that gives extra damage to attacks from behind. So these new changes have actually limited players in their choice of combat style.

I suspect the dev that was primarily responsible for testing these changes had a predominant playstyle of:

  1. Using a 1H weapon and shield with strength builds, not agility
  2. Preferred using target-lock (which also explains the camera changes)
  3. Using a controller instead of mouse/keyboard

Personally I’m not terribly sad to see the side-stepping dagger spam style be replaced (get that giant spider and croc loot at level 5!) but I think they really underestimated how much these changes would tick people off.

That is how you boil frogs.

Imagine if every time you got in your car it drove different? How many times are you going to wreck before you get used to it. Then tomorrow it drives different, and the next and the next…

Oh yes because absolutely everyone plays PVP

It is more like if i drive a car for 3 months, then i get the steering adjusted. The changes are day to day, more like quarter year to quarter year.

Horrible comparisons. This is a video game. If you take it this serious, the problem might not be with the game adjustments.

And PVE players can attack other players. They can’t destroy their buildings but they can certainly attack the players…and do. So, YES everyone plays PvP…technically. Or at lease one of the other modes allows that otherwise, why are you even on a server? Play in single player mode.

When controller-style movement is enabled, the change is hard to notice, if at all. That’s why I posted that as a semi-workaround. So, if you use(d) that before, no wonder things don’t feel different.

I do not know what could have made combat feel better. Maybe the increased targetting given to enemies?

As far as I understand the matter (caveat: that’s not very well), two things happened:

  • Enemies can turn while attacking. Easiest to notice with big enemies like giant crocodiles, who now move as if on a swivel mount. This change affects everyone pretty much the same way. It increases combat difficulty.
If one likes that, seems to be a matter of opinion. Personally, I like increased difficulty, but this change looks a bit stupid at least with large enemies, as their turning lacks an animation and is too fast to look believable.
  • One specific camera/control setting was in effect disabled. With free-look camera, you could use the mouse to turn your character. Now, you have to use keyboard commands for that.
This change probably was made to stop players using this particular controller setup. I can only guess that it was done as a misguided attempt at balancing controller setups.
However, it is not, in my view. PC players could all use that setting. If one decides to play with a controller or controller-style with mouse and keyboard, that’s a choice. It makes some things easier, some things more difficult. If the game had cross-platform play and competitive “E-Sport” gaming, there would be some sort of method to the madness, but it doesn’t, and the controller setup would probably be the least of your worries.
Breaking something just so that everyone is forced to use the same controller setup is just plain stupid. Not everybody got a car or even wants to have a car? Well, then slash all tires, so that nobody can drive their cars anymore. Basically forbidding one style of controller setup out of the blue is just not a good idea.

It obviously was done on purpose. That’s what I call picking a fight for no good reason.

That it doesn’t appear in the patch notes and maybe was introduced later during the beta makes it sound like a snap decision.
The change feels like the “nerf this” or “nerf that” cries one tends to hear after somebody’s ego got a scratch. If I’d be one to speculate, I’d say some guy in the dev team tried out PvP and lost to somebody using mouse look.
And as we all know, humans never loose to another because the other guy or gal was just better or luckier or younger or better prepared. We are all the very best at everything, and if we fail, it’s the fault of the ball, the team or the other guy cheating or violating some rule of the game. In video gaming, it’s lag, the balancing of spear vs. dagger or the controller used, never our own lack of mad skillz.

But I’m not one to speculate, so I never said all that.

even the heaviest armor wont save people from stun lock

I have another to add to my list of ridiculousness. I was just attacked by a fighter with a two handed sword. He did the downward strike heavy attack, slamming his sword into the ground and going down on one knee. You’ve seen it before. Well, I dodged out of the way, so the fighter, still on one knee with sword buried into the ground, pivoted to follow me. I had another belly laugh out of that one. Not quite as good as the lightcycle Rhino or the pirouetting Frost Giant, but still pretty amusing.

If by adjusted you mean going from tight and responsive to sloppy and meandering ok.

 Ya I can run up and swing my weapon and they can laugh at me for being fool.

Seriously I’ve had; on a few occasions, noobs run up to me attack, see I’m not taking damage and accuse me of hacking.

No, technically you are playing PVP in a PVE game.

What part of an over whelming majority of players play PVE, do you not quite get? Many belong to clans to do dungeons in a group :astonished:

:100:

No they said it was an unexpected side effect of a bug fix for something else. They have yet to say what bug. Personally I think it’s a CYA excuse.

I don’t notice it as much with big enemies as NPCs with 2 handed weapons. When it comes to the change in NPC attacks.
For me this change has turned what felt like a fluid feeling of active engagement, to a sluggish wait for the game to react to my input, while my enemy has moved past the point of attack.

I don’t believe in wait states. What you described is an obvious hack.

I’d argue that it doesn’t even increase difficulty, it just biases towards a different combat style. Before with the croc, you’d side-step and roll as needed. Now it’s just use a shield and block. You still need to get out of the way of the tail swipe, but that’s about it.

I said this earlier, but I think the people testing this who said “hey, this is fine” probably preferred a sword and board combat style with target locking (and likely using a controller as well).

Oh great! I will do!

Thanks so much!

Okay, true. I’ll rephrase: “It was probably supposed to increase difficulty.”

Players, here, wanted it. Most of the changes seem positive. Some of the dungeons were made harder.

Now it seems players don’t want it. I like the direction it had where anything that takes effort also takes stamina.

I dont mind them making the game a bit harder but they have done it in a very bad way

No player asked for this change to the combat system.

You really don’t get what this is about do you :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
