Chapter 3 New Combat is terrible

Sure, I when I was typing the initial response, I realized that I actually have been able to hold my own better than before. I cannot pinpoint what the improvement is from. I use all types of different weapons and attribute profiles. I NEVER use a spear. I only use one handed weapons and mostly a bow. (which baffles me as to how someone thinks that’s an advantage or OP weapon) It’s slow, it uses a lot of stamina, any movement will throw off your shot and damage is good at best but that requires a specific Attribute set up.

Anyway, the changes for us on Console came with an earlier update. Before we used to be locked into a position when fighting. We couldn’t turn while swinging or anything like that.

I wish I could be more specific for you. Sorry.

Yeah, I thought about this possibility as well. After more than a month, people may have gotten used to the horrible combat change and just sucked it up. I hope not. I mean, I have the awesome combat fix mod, but, as I have said before, allowing Funcom to get away with horrible changes will just encourage more useless fiddling with things.

I appreciate you taking time to respond. I am glad that your experience with playing on Console has improved. Unfortunately, I have the opposite experience on PC. I couldn’t hold my own anywhere near as well as I was before. Combat just wasn’t fun. Of course, the combat fix mod helped bring me back to the game, thank goodness.

Possible.

When deciding between ignorance/negligence and malice, I “prefer” to assume ignorance, and this holds true here, I think:

  • If the lead developer plays with a controller, he probably didn’t realize how significant of a change that was for mouse and keyboard players.
  • AndyB reacted as if not knowing of the change, and his reaction would not make much sense if he was informed and there was a secret plan to sneak in an unpopular change.

The change is, in a way, to a minute detail and likely to be overlooked if one only thinks in big pictures. During testing, I didn’t even really notice - while building, exploring, running purges (which most don’t do via melee) and so on, the issue doesn’t come up.
It’s so annoying to many people, however, that it may break the camel’s back for many players. It’s like changing the flavor of all toothpastes to mustard by government mandate. People like mustard, and brushing your teeth only takes 10 minutes or so of the day, but enacting a law like that may cost the next election.

Same here. Messing with the camera controls six years into a game shows either courage or, uhm, courage. A I said in the beta forum: Whatever they’re trying to fix, the medicine tastes so vile that it ain’t worth it.

I know you played the tar out of the Beta, and I did in my own way too. While I was playing it, I found combat to be more satisfying and realistic. This is with a keyboard and a mouse, with controller-style movement on. Do you think there could be any correlation – or have you seen any WASD players say it got better/worse/indifferent once controller-style was toggled on?

You can actually adjust that in the mod if you’re using it.
Log in as admin, use ~ or the insert key to open the console and type dc combatfix then hit enter to open this

The top slider controls how much NPCs can turn mid-attack, setting it to 0 will be like AoS where you could step away from any attack…
I find that somewhere between 20-30% is the sweet spot where you actually get the best of both worlds.

I don’t get why you say it isn’t any fun? Is it because now you lose more fights or have to back away from more fights? Cause I certainly lose or have had to flee more often than I used to. For me, that just makes me love the combat even more. When I get into fights, and lose I just go back again and try until I DO beat them. Personally, I think the fighting in the past (NPC wise) was too easy. I don’t think it’s fun to one shot everything in front of you. I want them to fight back, I want to have to figure as strategy of attack that results in victory. Tanking though legions of fighters just provides simple pleasure not the YES I DID IT pleasure…If you know what I mean?

Maybe the new features (which can be turned off in the settings I’ve found out) just need to be adjusted for and develop the technique?

Just thinking outloud. Cause I’ve seen Wak’s video and I was like, “Seriously? You think that’s a problem? We’ve always had that type of fighting on Console.” Then I played my son’s copy on PC with the OLD settings and I was like, I think the PC version people are asking to be fixed is garbage. I think it’s just going to come down to personal preferences eventually. Wak did a video on how to turn the combat changes off. If memory serves.

I agree they did make enemies too weak, and I wouldn’t mind them going back to having more health. Heck, keep the extra damage and increase health and then you have a real challenge. I believe there is a middle ground here that we could find.

But it is no challenge at all if you dodge out of the way of a charging rhino only to have it turn like Tron lightcycle to hit you anyway. It’s no fun to dodge out of the way of a stomping Frost Giant only to have it pivot on one foot to stomp you anyway. (Who knew Ymir was a fan of ballet?) It’s no fun to dodge out of the way of a lunging crocodile only to have it change direction mid-lunge to hit you anyway (or spin like a top to follow you as you try to get around it to attack). It’s no fun to leap with my axe out at an unarmed and unaware enemy only to have that enemy somehow instantly have his mace out and attacking me before my own blow lands, interrupting and killing me. I want a challenge. I just don’t want enemies that cheat. Now there are some enemies in the game, like the Grey Ones on Siptah, who are so deadly it’s hilarious.

It is no fun to aim at an enemy with the little dot I’ve been using for years to target things and go lunging off in the opposite direction. Of course, I tried locking the camera behind me, but that makes exploring the world a lot less fun. Combat is not the only reason I love Conan Exiles, and it’s not even the main one. But I used to enjoy getting into a throng of enemies and hacking people up. Of course, sometimes I’d die, but it was glorious! Now I am like a buffoon on the battle field, rolling around futilely dodging attacks and chopping at the air.

Hmm…I guess I never really gave any of those points a second thought. None of the things you mentioned bother me in the slightest. I just adjusted my timing and distance to attack and dodge and it’s been fine. You certainly can’t stand too close anymore and you need to dodge AWAY not to the side. Though, if you’re fighting one handed swords or pikes, then you need to dodge left or right. For us, I don’t think that’s even changed.

This right here.

Before the last patch, players were running circles around NPCs and able to attack instantly in any direction. Since everyone likes to refer to it as such, we’ll call this Age of Sorcery style. Before this chapter, we were in Age of Sorcery style, while NPCs were in Age of War.

Adjustments were made and NPCs were tuned. NPCs were overtuned and some side effects were introduced. Now players are in Age of War, but NPCs were reverted to Age of Sorcery style (as it was for PCs).

Three major issues arrived:

  1. Players facing away from the aiming point will not attack towards the aiming point if they don’t hold forward.

  2. There is an animation error when turning in place with the stationary camera rotation.

  3. NPCs turning was sped up too much.

2 and 3 will likely be fixed either in the patch coming up in January or the one after. 1 I am unsure will be fixed or adjusted. Its been said its being examined, but I haven’t seen any indication its considered an issue, yet. Feedback has been acknowledged on it however, so it might. Personally I think it will since there is absolutely no benefit in attacking in a direction you’re not pointing at.

Once those three issues are addressed (especially 1 and 3) the combat system will feel quite a bit better and it will alleviate most issues people have. The ones who wish to be able to 180 instantly between combos will be unhappy, but unfortunately for them, that chicken’s head has been severed.

i wasnt bragging. And I question that, because the hp looks the same on the npcs. The purge scales, bit if i remember the siege is static and supposed to take a coop effort to break in and raid it. BTW, anyone can also beat it by killing only the boss solo with steel arrows, a hardsteel bow build.

What i am saying is the game is so easy, even this change doesnt really make it harder, but just an inconvenience with the new mechanic. From my 6 years playing, i have learned a majority of players left are ones that like the faceplant challenge. ANYTHING that requires a smidgen of thought is “sky is falling” worries.

Way to wreck the game, change your name to unfuncom. I love this game, but HATE what has happened to it, the AGES OF GARBAGES. All of them are terrible and have taken away not added anything. Shove it up your ass, Unfuncom. I will NEVER and I mean NEVER put another penny into this game nor entertain purchasing any new upcoming titles. I better stop before this rage gets out of hand but thanks for the memories. The future of this Age of crapola’s will trudge on without my support.

None of that craziness bothers you? Pirouetting Frost Giants? Lightcycle rhinos? Hmmm. I guess we have different ideas about what kind of game Conan Exiles should be.

I play The Division 2 and love it. If there were an update where enemies could shoot at me and then their bullets could change direction midair to hit me, you can believe I would react badly. This feels the same way.

I hope you’re right. I don’t mind change, but it has to have a purpose. This change seems to have come out of no where and does nothing useful or fun.

Honestly I dislike Q… I don’t want to use Q and the simple reason is multiple enemy fights.

If I have 3 NPCs on the go and I need to switch my target, before I can turn and hit the person I need to hit. If I use Q now I have to unQ then reQ then unQ and reQ and maybe on a controller that isn’t so bad but it is silly on a Computer.

And when people say the old way was unrealistic. If thrust forward and then pivot my weight to my other foot and move in a new direction it is very fluid. Maybe not as fluid as it used to be in Conan but significantly more than it is now.

You are totally right the people that are really impacted by this are people that don’t use Q or a Controller.

The biggest problem is there are two issues.

First is the changes to Character Combat and the Changes to NPC combat.

I lose my fluid combat and the NPC now can switch in mid combo to attack me. Making side dodges nearly useless and it basically impossible to get behind a mob because they are locked on to you.

This change sucks. It is not good. It is the biggest issue with the changes to the game.

More so the lack of fluid combat also sucks.

Individually though they are bad but togeather they are just terrible.

Okay now, I’m loosing to “reach”. That plus cripple on reach looks like “meta”. It only takes two enemies, instead of three, to stun me.
:man_shrugging:

Harder? No. Less fun :100:

And here you are

I hate it myself and why I hadn’t used it before. One of my issues with lockon is a roll/dodge isn’t straight, it’s an arc then keeps you with in your enemies reach :rage:

I have never used Q before like this, but I have heard some people say that the change to combat seems like a form of “tab targetting.” I can see why they might think so from your description.

Fun is subjective. Most of the fun i have in this game is the discord chat with my clan mates while we stockpile materials daily. And the new mechanic is fun to me. Fun as in learning to play slightly different way than being stale and predictable.

LOL, nope none of what MOST people complain about on the forums bothers me. Usually I find their complaints to be petty. As for the pirouetting Frost Giants and Light Cycle Rhinos, nope. Also doesn’t bother me. Like I said, I adjusted for the change and attack and defend differently. However, unlike your Bullet example, a real-life rhine or creature would be able to turn to adjust their attacks based on where their target is. The rhino charge can’t change direction. Only their CQ attacks. Same thing with Giants. When they begin their heavy attack, dodge back, then go in for the attack. Gone are the days when you could just stand underneath and enemy and spam attack with an occasional dodge.

1000% True. You could changes the combat to anything and I would adjust and have at it. This whole “combat sucks” thread is just petty to me. Adapt and overcome and you will be victorious. Plus, let’s face it. Most of the combat we need to be concerned with is against other players. NPCs won’t loot you.
