Pretty obvious whats happening around Conan. I have over 1800 hours logged in on PVP servers and lately I moved to PVE-C. The official PVP servers are super toxic and destroying peoples bases is really easy. I got tired of baby sitting the base, it became a second job so I moved to PVE-C.
PVE-C you get the same toxic people walling in obelisks and points of interest. And of course there is nothing you can do about it because there is no PVP. So with PvP your damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
My second problem with PVE-C is the game settings. I get thrown into this harsh world that I should be scared of. Monsters around every corner, a struggle to survive. Then a week later I have everything in the game and quit because there is nothing to do but build. This is why you see MASSIVE structures on PVE-C servers sprawling across the landscape in all directions. I have a castle on 1821 and it is so laggy I cannot even walk around without teleporting.
My opinion. Conan is going to be taken over by private servers. The problem with private servers is the Admins using the server to fuel their own power hungry needs. So it appears all three options have some large glaring problem facing them and the player must choose the lesser of the three evils.
I wanted a new experience in Conan. I started a hard server. Somewhere you might not be able to thrive unless you work at it. I added loads of mods to make the experience harder and more immersive. Being the server owner, I never interfere with what players want to do. Its PVE-C so I don’t have to bay sit my base, but you can PVP any hour of the day. You want to kill me and take my stuff, I don’t care. I paid for the server for 1 year. Its running smooth and I welcome anyone who is feeling the need for something more out of their conan experience. Play your way, I will not stop you, I will not spawn in materials, I will not complain when I get murdered. But don’t complain if I kill you also.
Also we have Age of Calamitous here. Level 120, factions, dungeons, and sorcery. That is if you can survive that long. Most cannot.
No. Its not just an add. It is also an opinion/discussion about the current state of the game/servers. If I post this thread in the server section, will you come tell me to keep the discussions out of the server recruitment section?
Ive quit the game pretty much because of the reasons you listed having tried a few Officials/Private servers.
Sadly I hated AoC mod (which was one of the reasons I quit my 3rd Private server)
Real shame as much like Age of Conan before, Funcom seems to release brilliant games full of potential that are riddled with problems you hope will be ironed out. But never are.
I am personally hoping a more casual PvP server/setting is considered when the expansion is released. I love the PvP in this game, but I do not have the time or patience to baby sit a base for 40 hours a week just to maintain a presence on a server - Let alone be competitive when which ever bored Alpha decides to chuck bombs at me offline or on because they have nothing else to kill. This concept is completely ludicrous for the majority of casual gamers out there who have other commitments.
What dont you like about AoC mod. This is the first time ive used it. When the new map releases im going to start a casual pvp, no building damage new map server with limited mods and harder gathering.
There’s always that risk. However, there are some successful private servers too, so not every admin is on a power-trip. I assume you don’t count yourself among these power-hungry admins either.
I find it hard to believe that admins who abuse their status are able to keep players on their servers for very long. It’s the ones who are able to build a strong, fair community, with a set of rules that can be understood by people who join and that are enforced in a fair manner, that have the most success. Running a server isn’t free, so having one for the sole purpose of power-tripping may not be cost.-effective.
When people know what they can expect from a private server, and those expectations are met by the admin, you can have a lot of fun, and the server will live long and prosper.
(As far as Age of Calamitous goes, it kinda turns the setting into something that isn’t the Hyborian Age, which is why I personally don’t like it. But many people do seem to prefer a more generic high fantasy setting, so clearly there’s demand for servers running AoC.)
Perhaps hate was too strong a word. There was nothing really wrong with the actual mod, but I felt the setting detracted from the brilliance of R E Howards world and Funcom’s excellent interpretation.
Then the circle of wall just needs to be bigger and you have exactly the same problem… You need moderated servers, which privates are and therefore you can get rid of toxic players
Yep. There’s no limit to how much effort malicious people are willing to go through in order to block useful features from other players. The only even slightly feasible solution would be to draw “ley lines” from each obelisk to the two closest ones and make those ley lines no-build zones so it would be impossible to completely encircle the obelisks.
The reason why I don’t like this idea very much is because most of my bases are smack on those very lines. Purely coincidental, too, of maybe I just really liked the feng shui of these ley lines.
Agree…official PvP servers are NOT solo or even casual player friendly. I enjoy PvP but can not spend all day gathering resources for my base just to have it totally destroyed by a large alpha clan that loves making others gaming experience miserably. This game needs some sort of PvP lite server…combination of PvE-C and PvP.
This is great! Least it will make these raids far more costly and timely. This increase in material strength can even work for PvE-C. There has to be someway for the players to take down that wall that goes on forever (pve-c). Agian this is a start and can work for both PvP and PvE-C servers
everything is covered with structures and walled off
Lets pause for a moment and meditate. Some people don’t like loosing their stuff, including buildings. For others that is fair game and a penalty the game mechanics are built around. That is why there are different server types. In general this game doesnt work very well in PvE - it just doesn’t. You get a cluttered map pretty fast.
You even get that on PvP servers, alas that vital area somebody thought was a good idea to deny to the rest of the server has an exceedingly high probability of NOT making it through the night as explosives get poopled by otherise warrying clans.
You can’t do that on a PvE server. The structures are indestructable. The lesson we learn here is that structures are SUPPOSED to be destructable and yes, that includes one’s own. If that is disabled because people prefer it that way you run into problems. That is kinda the tradeoff to pay.
Now… i am not telling you how to play your game but suggesting on the one hand stuctures (the owned) are too easy to destroy whilst on the other complaing about not being able to destroy structures (those of others) is not going to fly for quite obvious reasons.
There is your problem. And there is a solution: play on your own server. Pristine map and nobody is destorying structures if set to single player or even PW protectet with a select few.
And no, players shouldnt be offline and safe from raiding during raid hours on a PvP server. That kinda defeats its purpose. These are basically the three options how to play (four actually but lets leave that can of worms closed for now). Now explore yourself and decide which one suits you best.
Personally i think PvP does as a game with working game mechnanics. If i just wanted to builld elaborate castles i’d probably play PvE (and curse myself for discovering another server that has vital resources walled off to build said castle).
