I have to agree. I spent quite a bit of time last night (I play on a PVE server) trying to give the hose a proper and thorough test drive. Needless to say, it ended in spectacular disaster, on more than one occasion. It may make sense on a PVP server, I don’t know. But at least on a PVE server (and in our single player modes), is it too much to ask to have a toggle, or some form of choice?
I can’t even imagine what it would be like if the horse followed the movement of the mouse. That would be a real mess, wouldn’t it? Whenever you aim for a guy next to you, your horse starts spinning.
Absolutely all the games I know (FPS or TPS) work like that. In recent days alone I played 3 games (not counting Conan) that work like Conan once on a horse or any vehicle. And I could cite a bunch of examples since the 90s (basically since environments are in 3D). It ALWAYS worked like this. The mouse is used to aim, and you use the keys to orient yourself. This is normal because the horse does not move at all like us, the simple fact that it can’t strafe makes it obvious to distinguish the aim and the direction.
I do not want to sound intolerant, I understand that the way of playing is unique to everyone. But in this case I have the impression that you don’t realize how unplayable it would be. I do not even see how Funcom could calibrate that to make it intuitive. Unless you don’t want to fight mounted at all, and only move. In this case I understand (a bit), but the mounted fight exists and must be taken into consideration.
I agree with the toggle idea, like that everyone does as he wants. But I would regret that Funcom waste time developing a form of gameplay that I have never seen claimed on any other game.
Controlling your horse with the mouse is pretty common in games where you don’t have to aim at your enemies during mounted combat, but those are almost invariably single player games, like Witcher 3. In those games, it’s perfectly acceptable for the game to guess what you’re trying to hit and assist you with aiming. It wouldn’t work at all for a game like Conan Exiles.
That’s why I support the idea of the toggle, in which the secondary mode would allow you to steer with the mouse, but the aiming would be as fixed as with the lance.
I agree that it would require taking some of the devs’ time away from other things, but it might be worthwhile.
The other option is to provide a good autorun binding for the mount. Initially I thought there wasn’t one, but then I realized that the normal autorun applies to mounts too. It’s just completely useless, because it behaves exactly like the normal autorun – as soon as you press left or right, it deactivates. For running on foot, it makes sense, because left and right are strafing controls, not steering. For riding on a horse steered by keyboard, it’s completely unusable.
And that toggle could happen when draw your weapon, is not a bad idea to have it if it make life easier for some people, but to be honest, i think is not really necesary.
Tip: The horse, as you may already noticed, doesn’t move like your character, therefore, you don’t use it like your character, you will notice that if you stop pressing W all the time it will become far easier to steer, combine it with sprint key for better results.
I am very much opposed to this. Conan Exiles does not offer any tutorials for new players. So imagine getting on your horse for the first time, steering it with your mouse, seeing an enemy you want to fight, drawing your weapon and losing control of your mount
They should just make the current mode the default and allow us to toggle if we want to. Or fix the autorun, there’s even a bug report for it:
I honestly don’t think people are complaining about the difficulty of maneuvering. Even if you could control the mount with the mouse, it wouldn’t be able to corner the way your character can. It’s just that having to use so many keys for steering is cumbersome, especially during the time you’re just riding without fighting.
You just broke my brain
You wanna aim the bow with A and D?
Press C
Wow ok. And how would you aim up and down in that setup?
This is the (only) one that makes sense: if on a Horse, don’t stop Autorun because you pressed left/right. That is all that is needed.
(personally I don’t see the need at all, but then I have thousands of hours in Mount and Blade, which is considered the best mounted combat game for a reason, so I am very used to the control scheme)
Ok, Ill play; we already said W and S for forward and backwards, A and D for aiming left and right, and then 2 more keys for aiming up and down? How many fingers do you have on your left hand. That sounds unsusable.
It doesn’t. Forwards and backwards is for the horse movement.
Oh I’m a genius! I’ve managed to press C. It helps you to get out of many awkward situations you know.
Up and down, not forwards and backwards. You need to aim along both axes, otherwise you’ll miss a lot.
The controls are good on a horse, you have much more control as it is now.
Ok I read somewhere on these forums (cant seem to find it now) that Funcom had fixed it to allow us to rebind the horse movements to how we move our character. But I do not see any change in the Keymap…am I losing my mind?
No, they fixed it so you can rebind the horse movements in-game, instead of editing the Input.ini
file on your hard drive.
no, but how about the ability to choose how you want to do the combat, with wasd, arrow keys, any keys i want to assign or even with mouse and chosen attack keys.
Im confused…I just dont see it under keybindings…if its not there…where?
There is currently minimal keybindings for mounted control.
