I has not changed, it WAS changed. When you dig and do some research you’re going to find out all these TTRPG studios, game studios, tv stations are owned by the same few billionaires who try to control and create culture to make us all equally enslaved.
In the 1990s the game and its settings were sexist, racist and otherwise bigoted.
I did not find them sexist back then but yes it had more realism and flavour.
Even in Howard’s novels women are often main heroes and important NPCs (Belit) which was unheard of in his times when women were basically enslaved in the kitchens and bedrooms. He based Hyborian Age cultures on actual existing cultures to some extent, but it’s kind of realistic not racist. If one get’s butthurt because his ancestors are portrayed as savages running around nude, then he needs to cope, as every culture had started like this.
Tolkien on the other hand did the same thing, but in a completely different way, also there was not even single one female in LOTR, they made them up in the movies and removed several important male characters like Tom Bombadil.
These days, elves and orcs can make babies together (which used to be biologically impossible in old lore) and it’s entirely socially acceptable, even if the elf and orc are a same-sex couple.
These days science has to bow before politics.
In the process of getting rid of racial stereotypes and prejudices (or imaginary races, so who was offended in the first place if dwarves hated orcs?) they also got rid of unique racial cultures and societies, and turned everyone into humans with different physiological features.
Exactly what I wrote before, the owners of these franchises force this upon us.
Robert E. Howard’s works got away with a lot of stuff because he wrote the stuff he wrote in the 1930s, when our Western culture was still very different from what it is now. And no, I would not want to see those works censored or edited to become socially acceptable for the 2020s (even though Red Nails would probably have more overtly lesbian themes) because they represent the time and age when they were written.
It’s already happening, Howard was cancelled and latest TTRPG was remade… They created a quiet second edition which removes the word “exotic” in description of Khitans. I’m sure Cimmerians saw Khitans as exotic and it was also the other way around. Does this word sound derogatory?
Who’s the zealot behind this change? Well it’s easier to find out who had bought out the company which makes that TTRPG.
But there’s no need to go to extreme lengths in derivative works. Just because we don’t see all of the brutalities in Conan Exiles doesn’t mean those don’t exist in the game world. You can freely imagine doing stuff with your entertainer thralls, without need to make it into a game feature.
We want that virtual reality or not? There is a great mod Devious Desires for Conan that allows to have sex with other players and thralls + it brings in 1000 other emotes including face expressions etc that are very handy for RP.
We had some fun with the mod (of course we experimented with sex scenes) but it grows old quickly and everyone returned to normal playing. Including sex in vanilla Conan would probably be a big deal for younger teenagers and soccer moms.
But again why is it normal to show violence and why is it taboo to show women’s breasts etc?
I think it comes from ancient religious orders where women were treated as property and told to cover themselves.
I’m in Europe and for example in my country women are encouraged to breastfeed in the open, on the streets or in public transport… Because it’s normal thing for a mother to feed the baby and it should not be branded improper. And they eventually did start to breast feed in the streets and it’s cool with me.
If you want to make an adult movie in Conan Exiles, I suggest you get creative with emotes. I mean, I did build a brothel in my Exiled Lands town a couple of years ago:
You need to have an Inn, a Blacksmith and a brothel in every self respecting fantasy town
