Let's Talk About Roleplay

I joined an RP Server, avoided Global Chat and tried to live a clean life as a tall, lean Khitan with a Crimson Lotus habit. Got raided for not communicating via Global.

Like I’m just going to talk into the clouds. The whole thing was absurd.

That’s mind-blowing. I have always aspired to becoming a presence on more servers for this reason alone. You’re a gem.

If you think about it, we are all role playing a character we are not in RL. But to immerse yourself in the timeframe and era, you cannot talk about modern things in chat.

I believe the problem is not in how you’re asking the question, but the question itself. You’re looking for peoples expectations of what an RP server should be and I would argue that is the problem with your question. I’ve tried reaching out myself to find what people want in an RP server and I’ve mostly gotten crickets, to be honest. I think everyone has a different concept of what it should/could be. To that end, simply defining a server as ‘RP’ is rather problematic given that, I believe, everyone has a different opinion or idea.

The only thing I never understood is why all the RP servers must have pvp? I can understand pve-c, but pvp? Why? This is exactly the reason I don’t participate in RP servers and no other.
I don’t believe that an official server can become RP, unless the old players decide to RP but not on pvp, no way.
I play RP in pve servers from day one.
My character is always a hyborian girl, named Bella, she is virgin, waiting to meet Crom on death , always dressed in full white, the only red is the blood of the mobs and npcs, my clan is always Farm & Build and my higher goal is to help and provide to the weak, or to the ones that experienced great loss. In order to do that, I need no obelisk campers, no back stabbing, no base raiding. I started from pvp, doing this, (helping others in need), then jump to pve c, since the ones I was helping was rading my base 🤦🏼, to pvec, as @CodeMage said, deep s… t and finally I joined @anon83039162 on 3728.
2 years almost in this server I was lucky to help and provide to more than 50 persons and I am happy about it. I was invited multiple times on pvp RP private servers, but only because they were pvp(popular mode), I refused gently.
I believe the pvp mode is what exactly kills the joy of RP, but that’s my opinion, it doesn’t have to be right :rofl::rofl:.

They don’t. And the ones that do make generally make it clear that you cannot KOS (kill on site) for no reason at all. You have to have a reason in character and you have to make your intentions clear and give the other person the ability to respond, even if that response is to run the heck away. However, there are plenty of RP-PvE servers as well as RP-PvE-C servers as well.

I just popped in right now to grab a screen shot for you. I did not include the server names, but as you can see I filtered it by PvE and RP and the first two servers have 40 people and 36 people online at this moment.

Now going into PvP and RP you do see higher population servers. I never attempted to deny that. You got one with 65 people online and then 35, 31, and 30.

I cannot speak for everyone but I know some people like the idea of being able to have consequences for your in character actions up to and including death (requiring you to create a new character). For others they like the idea that different clans could potentially go to war with one another in character (as long as everything remains civil out of character). But with the PvP flags available you can create arenas to fight in if you really need to do that in an RP-PvE server so I fail to see the need for it.

PvP is not for everyone which is why Funcom does a great job of creating a game that allows for PvE, PvE-C and PvP. But as I have shown you, you can find RP servers on all 3 types though PvE-C seems to be the least common.

Uh…no. I sincerely doubt anything like that would happen. But then again who know?

I’m not sure how I would RP my favorite reason to attack someone on a PVE-C server, but it’s basically “this is the 3rd time in a row during this play session that I’ve come to this NPC camp and found you here, quit hogging the same camp and let someone else have a go” :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Vanguard Saga of Heroes (MMORPG) had a roleplaying preferred server which is where my guild was based on. I played there for 2 years. Very cool player base we had, between the non-RPers and RPers and the crafting guilds.

I’m trying an adaptation approach on my server. I have a full length story written which was based around a very long running AD&D campaign. This way there’s an actual aim for the RP side of things other than…what was that…killing someone for wearing the Queen’s same dress?

I know you were joking, but I just want to clarify: I believe do know how to RP to a certain degree, but I don’t actually know how I would RP that

Then again, I imagine that on a true RP server, there would be rules governing when, how, and why you’re allowed to massacre an NPC camp. And from those rules, you could infer a perfectly valid reason to attack the person doing that.

At least, that’s my best guess. I wonder what more serious RPers think.

I guess my difficulties with RP in Conan Exiles boil down to my cynical view of the players’ nature: without a GM/DM to keep things “on track”, the players’ action will invariably devolve either into Monty Python or Murder Hobo Fest. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Again, I’m not mocking or disparaging or criticizing. I’m just thinking out loud in hope of hearing other people’s opinions.

Usually when people RP in these games, its closer to forum/chatroom RP that is done in real time with fancy graphics (the game itself) rather than like Dungeons & Dragons. Sometimes you see elements of the latter added in like dice rolls to determine outcomes. Though usually PVP handles most conflicts in CE on those that have it as an option.

Most RP kinda goes along these lines:

You make a character, you find others to talk to when you login, and then just see where it goes. Sometimes a player will play an ‘antag’/villain/etc to try and make some sort of conflict, posing some sort of problem ranging from something as small as a rumor, an insult, or something more serious like kidnapping, or raiding.

Doesn’t normally require a Dungeon/Game Master, though sometimes server admins can kinda play that role by pushing forward events or playing NPCs. Usually the role of an admin is to settle disputes between players, make sure players aren’t power gaming (playing a too powerful character, PVP negates this), metagaming (using out of character information as your character who wouldn’t have such info), or god modding (making someone else’s actions for them). As well as keeping the server clean from trolls, bigots, and toxic players and keeping the server from imploding from overly large builds and the like.

Playstation servers

The ages are small, that means that most of them are new and Fr, witch I don’t speak except if my role is mute :rofl::rofl:.
From 21 servers 15 are locked.
The funny think comes to the oldest one,

It is listed on pve 🤦🏼
I searched about 2 years ago to join a pve role play server, there were about 5, private, locked, in French or Deutch, I speak only English as a second language :man_shrugging:.
Europe is not easy my dear, too many languages, too much irony against English speakers :pensive:. Every nation here thinks that their language is above all, Europeans are not easy

Yeah, I actually tried to join a EU server once and was booted because I did not speak German. Even though the admin spoke English :woman_shrugging: AND I would love to learn German but oh well. I did not specify EU in my searches and I play on PC so I can’t check PS servers to help you out.

Du sprichst Deutsch nicht?

Well mine’s garbage so don’t feel bad. What’s funny is I seem to get a lot of EU folks on my server. Mostly UK but there’s been some Swedish, Dutch, I believe we had a Norwegian briefly.

That thread really sparked my interest in RP again.
My clan and I like to roleplay now and then, on rare occasions other server members jump on it, which leads to funny conversations and small skirmishes. And I really enjoy that. Still wonder if a RP server would fit me.

I was thinking about joining a RP server once, but I always feared for the rules being really restricting. From what I grasped from youtube videos, you might end up with a server admin hovering over you sometimes, to control if you break character. :joy:
Which brought up a question for any RPer reading this: How do you manage to not break character?

Are there RP Server eligible for people who don’t take roleplaying THAT seriously?

Thank you for any insight and opinions

From both reading this thread and others I’ve seen/participated in, RP servers seem to be just as varied in their structure and format as any other type. Me thinks we need to come up with some sort of system to denote certain overarching themes…but I digress.

We take RP as serious as the players want but it’s not a mandatory thing. Breaking character for us isn’t an issue as we use one of the in-game chats for character interactions. This leaves us free to act however we choose if we’re on VC or in a secondary chat (mods). We’re building a system around good ol’ pen and paper RPGs with sheets, rules for interactions, etc., but the game is still the game and everything is still open to other types of players.

However, this is just one server of Crom knows how many and I’m sure they all vary to some degree.

If you already roleplay in CE what is it that makes you like it?

Heroic fantasy universe of Conan, the game graphics.

Do you play on private RP servers or…?

I played on rp, rp pvp, semi-rp servers. I once raided an official pvp server with two friends. It was so good. Too much fun. It lasted 1 hour. No stress due to the many problems that rp and hrp brings on rp servers. We fought with stone weapons, we explored bases, it was the most fun thing I’ve done on conan so far.

What kind of characters do you like to play in RP?

I have no preference, each of my characters, are a pretext to learn more about the universe of conan.
There is a challenge that I love to take up, to find a new voice to give for each character that I make. This is one of the things that motivates me the most to play, finding a new character to use a new voice. I love the challenge!

What do you dislike about RP in CE?

So, I’ll make it short. These are the people who ruin other people’s rp. To the point of being inconsistent with their rp and their character’s character because they plan everything hrp and pretend not to understand in rp.

The rules that affect the gameplay of the game to make things more balanced according to them because they do not know pvp.
Ban everything that is legendary. Example of impact: The big axe becomes useless in pvp.
The rules that do not respect the heroic fantasy. Example: With fashionist forbid to put a light skin on a heavy armor.

What can Funcom do to better support RP and RPers?

Add weather and natural events. Hail, snowstorm, have a little chance to get kill by a lightning, quicksand. All flying mount from robert.

The flying mounts found in the robert stories could be made available in the admin panel only. I don’t like server events, especially those that have to be taken into account in the rp. I like the events out of series. Unfortunately we can never escape from it. Flying mounts would be a good thing to make the events more immersive in this fantasy world.

I like the off-series events, but I would like to see more crossover events. I’d like to see flying saucers with aliens with old fashioned designs with remote weapons like in the old sci-fi series.

One or more stargate and mortal kombat dlc’s for conan too? I’d buy it.

What’s been your best RP experience in CE so far?

The fluidity of the dialogues when two players understand each other in rp, that they know how to express themselves and that feelings are in play, that gives very beautiful moments I find.

Pvp players who are comfortable with voice who know how to combine speech with gestures. When pvp players arrive on a rp server and they are good. They bring incredible rp mass. The pvp players are the ones who bring the conflicts, and the rp on a server. Otherwise there is nothing going on except a lot of “dinette” rp that gets boring very quickly.

My best rp lasted for months, my character was not originally created for anything other than dying in a two week war created accordingly with the staff to bring conflict to a rp server. Finally this war never happened because our commander was very good in pvp and took everything on himself by chaining duels to avoid unnecessary deaths. Then after a while I found myself alone in the city that we had founded with 4 people. My rp ended up evolving so much, its possibilities were immense and brought me to things I had never done before. Managing a city, managing a battle with 20 players participating, being respected by everyone when my character was just a kid. He even had a best buddy in the game whose absence impacted him throughout the rp. The commander had trained me and I even ended up training players in pvp, inventing new combat strategies. All the while avoiding the wrath of Tyros, who didn’t want me to go to the north except to fight a war, and who wanted me to join him when I died. And so on. A character with so many opportunities that opened and closed, that many times, I stayed to turn in circle in the city where I lived. The life of this character could be adapted in 3 movies :'D because he had 3 big different phases. My cook has learned from life to get there.
The highlight is when I go to prevent fights organized for a demon. I was in mitra’s pajamas with my ankh and I yelled at them not to participate! Don’t sacrifice to the demon, convert to mitra and nothing will happen to you! I looked like a crazy person, it was too good.

Maybe the term RP SERVER is for rôle playing board games with paper rules players which begins conan. (written server)

I personnally have discover rôleplay with conan.
I ended up with acting. So acting, theatrical, etc… + videogame server or something like that would be more coherent maybe. (voice server) Because in vocal server the players are less timorous and are not afraid to fight either.

The reality is that the players that I play with are basically paper lurkers. That’ s why I specified “the roguelists who start conan” and who started by calling it RP SERVER."

In voice we play mostly with our childhood memories from tv, animation, movie, for me it’s more the voices of cartoons. Etc etc and we end up trying to make the actor and to take lessons of theater. Is it the evolution of the paper rounder you think?

I have personally never experienced this, however if I had I would leave that server. And to answer your question yes, there most certainly are server how that which are not THAT serious, as well as those which understand that not everyone has 20+ years experience and are willing to help people learn.
