Mounts Done Right

Hannibal rode a horse like all the officers after the end of the chariot era

But the Phoenicians (like the other North African civilizations that had elephantry) used North African elephants, Loxodonta africana pharaoensis.

Actually, they were African Elephants according to Roman Historians and military accounts of the time that survived. Interesting enough, when the Romans invaded Carthage to to take it over, they used loud drumming to spook the Elephants into fleeing. It worked and the result was that Carthage fell.

While the elephants did come from Africa they most likely weren’t the savannah elephants which are were and are mostly untameable, they were most likely the Loxodonta cyclotis, not the Loxodonta africana. Contemporary Roman accounts and the Roman histories do not differentiate between the two species. As in Conan Exiles, the elephants spawn in the savannah, we can assume they are related more closely to Loxodonta africana and generally untameable. Really though, we don’t have a clear answer.

Hannibal himself did actually ride an elephant named The Syrian, who was most likely an Indian elephant although we still don’t know for certain what species it was.

I love it when people don’t read what has actually been written. I’ll quote it so you can read it now:

Your link is 34 years old. You should find more recent (and more reliable) sources.

agreed!! flying mounts ruin every game.

I don’t see why an old source about an ancient topic, especially the NYT, is unreliable. Sorry for reading too quickly and skipping over the pharaoensis part, I wasn’t familiar with the extinct species. Always nice to learn something new.

That’s two different issues.

First: the NYT isn’t a peer-review publication. The link explains it better than I could do right now.
Second: research is an ongoing process. It’s always best to look for recent sources

Neither Livy or Polybius’s works were peer reviewed in the modern style if at all and they are the base for most of our information about Hannibal’s elephants. I’ve learned two things, I wish Loxodonta africana pharaoensis was still around and forums.funcom.com have intelligent people who know how to, and are willing to, argue a point without being insulting. Thank you.

Please keep things civil.

Peer review started during the 17th century. But that’s not a problem, since both Polybius and Titus Livius weren’t researchers: Polybius wrote only about the events of his time (and defined what an historian should and shouldn’t do), and Titus Livius said himself that part of his Ab Urbe Condita Libri isn’t accurate in an historical sense.

Flying Mounts would make the map super tiny. I can run from far East to far west easily. And I run and climb so often even regular mounts seem useless on this map. Let me ask? Do you want to summon your mount out of thin air when you need him? Cause if you keeping it real, he gonna get left vulnerable everytime you climb something. Also as of now only one Thrall can follow you, so will you have to ride it for it to follow or if he walks behind you, then you have no Thrall? There us more than just navigation to think of with mounts. I think if they focus more on Thralls, and let more follow you or let them climb,
they don’t even have to think of mounts

After primary school our Latin teacher had a bit of a midlife crisis, and for some time we had a newly-minted teacher. She wouldn’t have known the difference between Titus Livius and Titus Pullo. This experience is similar to that of many of my peers who went through public education; we were on the cusp of Latin’s extinction. Truly this is the reason we have such differences in understanding of biology, zoology, taxonomy among modern news sources. I wouldn’t say The Times is bad, but they’re not Science News. You can’t seek a source if you can’t read the words.

And now I’ll just fade away with this. That year the original Latin words in the book before me said “Hannibal drove elephant [ranks] around the Alps,” yet this teacher clearly said “Hannibal did ride
” Outside of class we declared this New Latin.

The Second PUNic war was 2,200 years ago?
Robert E. Howards fictional Hyborian age was supposedly 10,000 B.C.

I think Hannibal’s mount is irrelephant.

edit: sorry, I like puns

Well iron swords didn’t appear in history until 1200 BC.

You said it though it’s a fictional world. I mean there’s pterodactyls and magic in the world of Conan.

No mounts it will ruin the game mechanic!

Just wanted to chime in with a thought I had for some flavor mounts as well. We should have like various types of thrones which are carried by thralls lol. Seems awesome to me.

They already said no to a max level cap increase multiple times. All it would do is let players become jacks of all trades and thats not a good way to play/build. There needs to be advantages as well as disadvantages.

As for mounts, transport mounts (slow-equal moving speed) are the only kind this game could benefit from. Speed mounts just make the game world smaller no matter how many expansions they may add. It takes away from the brutality of the lands this game wants us to experience. Even if they could find a work around to get mounts in I’d hope they dont add speed mounts (they already stated a flat no to flying mounts long ago).

Animal companions for thrall defence or exploration would be neat and a few select larger ones for seige but they have to be restrictive otherwise it becomes another pet vs pet game. Id personally say no player can have an animal companion in battle but allow a unique thrall that commands one. As for seige mount it’d need to be time based or cannot regain health unless brought back to their pen, something otherwise players would just use them for everything.

Simple way, make mounts to transport stuff from a to b and JUST make them as fast like the player is with sprinting, so u have a mount, that have the speed of sprinting all the time and carry some more stuff, maybe a horse, that lvl up over time, to increase the stats of carry and HP from it. Possible idea is to use the sail with a thrall on the horse to make it pick up on the butt, like the old wester films

No need for high end speed mounts, same speed as sprinting and fine for me at all, if it can carry some tons of good stuff myself loot over the map
