Performance and stability issues after June 2nd patch - Feedback thread

I think the issue is that it’s not always easy to reproduce these bugs. Which is confusing to me, since it seems like nearly everyone is having the same issue, but they did say they’d only recently gotten a repro, so it must be the case. It’s true, in my experience, that bugs which occur on servers sometimes don’t occur in single player, or vice versa, like the wind needs to be blowing in a particular direction and the humidity needs to be within a certain range to reproduce a bug? So I think it’s likely the QA is happening, but they just didn’t have the same issues we’re having because… well, the game is funny like that sometimes.

Coding - using google to find a working code for the thing you want done and then start to fidget it it suits your needs. Does not imply understanding of the algorithm.
Programming - understanding what you have to do and being able to construct the needed algorithm by yourself.

Honestly, the idea of publicly singling out a QA worker to name and shame deserves no better reply. Seriously, do you not understand what’s wrong with that?

No, I’m not. I haven’t been happy with Funcom’s QA outcomes for a long time and I’ve said it over and over again. The big difference is that I never once presumed to think it’s the problem with the QA staff, much less one particular person. Not to mention that, even if it were a problem with people, naming them on a public forum would not only be totally heartless and disproportionate, but also quite illegal. At least, I’ve never heard of a country that allows an employer to “discipline” its employees by publicly shaming them, by name.

What the hell is wrong with you anyway? And don’t give me any crap about how this is a personal attack. Of course it’s personal, because I don’t see anyone else here proposing stuff like that.

During frustrating playtimes, I suggest they invite a cat onto their lap. Makes it impossible to lose one’s temper. :catnobanana:

So to summarize a bit. We’re aware of issues with long loads, crashes and the game freezing, as well as issues with mods (of various kinds, but most notably, not being able to load custom maps).
We have isolated where the error may have occurred and we’re now working on rebuilding a new version that’s not affected by this problem. From there it’s testing it and releasing it.

We’ve got no estimate yet, since any of those steps could take either seconds or hours depending on our findings. But we’re doing the best we can to make sure we’re thorough with it and to release it as soon as we possibly can without jeopardizing other parts of the game.

On another note. Please let’s refrain from pointing fingers and calling out individuals, especially by their real names. This is in regards to a recent message our moderation had to intervene against. Please, once again, let’s try to be excellent to each other.

private and official, game freezes randomly or after using map room

Well by definition it’s QA work to find BUGs. So if they are able to find any it’s the programmer that introduced them - not the QA.
The QA can be held accountable for not finding them, not for the bugs themselves.

Man, we’ve come a long way since the Jargon File was written. I miss those days. Less snobbery and elitism, and more camaraderie and good-natured ribbing.

Be careful with that:

Thanks for continuing to keep us updated!

Praise Crom!

Why are we even having this pissing contest? It’s totally irrelevant. Zip it up.

On Discord I’m Murtaugh every night:
Elf… I can’t feel my legs.

Performance update: both clanmates and I experienced hardlocks on game exit requiring Task Manager. One member fataled before the patch while loading his user (respawn). This required a Task Manager kill process. Same member fataled after the patch while re-loading the game client itself. Good hardware, RTX 3070.

Additional data points (probably redundant at this point):

Private server, modded
Actions that trigger game freeze/client hang: admin teleport, pippi /home command, maproom teleport, respawning at bedroll following a death… anything that triggers nontrivial rendering load on the client side.

Also, exiting the game.

Finding a reliable repro was, I assume, easy.

Maybe for them, because they have access to the code and they wrote it. As a player, I haven’t been able to come up with a reliable repro, as in a series of steps that you always execute the exact same way and they always make the bug manifest itself.

I wonder what the reliable repro is for this particular bug. :bug:

Yeah, knowing there’s an issue is one thing, getting it to consistently and reliably reproduce is another altogether. Even as the ones who have access to the internal workings of the game, finding a solid repro isn’t always simple. In this particular case we found one relatively quickly, but there’s been other times where a proper testcase eluded us for quite some time - and in some edge cases, continues to do so.

Well I did, and I posted it (Performance and stability issues after June 2nd patch - Feedback thread - #104 by RasterOps) but it seems to have been buried, missed, something.

Many threads got merged into this one. I totally missed that post. It does look like a repro, I wonder if I could also replicate it on my own computer (just for sh*ts and giggles) when I get the chance.

We did see your report and relayed it onwards.

same issues here, random freezes and every time i map to southern jungle on exiled lands, horrible bug :frowning:

Official server. When I enter the game and play a little, the game freezes completely. Fix the problem! We cannot play with a friend.

I don’t know if anyone has commented on it before, but I have noticed that the game crashes when you just go through this area (to me and other players) I do not know if there are more areas like this …
