Post-reset, items decayed, then disappear

First off, I’m new to Conan. First week of play, but level 60.

Official server #1504 / PC Steam / No mods.

I moved a chest to the top of a 3-brick tall tower, pre-shutdown on Feb 13 @ 4am EST.

After server reset, the chest was gone as well as all contents.

Checked event log:
2023.02.13-05.35.02 Server started.
2023.02.13-15.28.04 Large Chest owned by Mr-Lock has lost stability.

That’s the time I relogged the next day. If I had known something dropped from a chest, I’d go pick it up, but I had no warning, so I assume it disappeared like any other dropped item (2 mins).

When do chests lose stability and decay? There’s no timer associated that I can find.

Bug Reproduction:
Only explanation I have is that it was semi-close to an enemy path/“unable to build” demarcation line. I’d rather not reproduce this error as I lost a trunk full of trained pets and crafted gear.

I’m not happy for sure, but want to know what the rules are, so I can avoid these types of setbacks.

Thank you.

If you use the repair hammer it will show you the decay time

I think this one of the biggest unknowns to new players.
I think everyone has lost something or other when they first started playing.

The more foundations, walls, etc the longer the decay timer. Possibly more too if higher tier materials. Not sure exactly on that so I’ll let the real experts comment on that part

How did you move it? Did you use the “move” action from the radial menu? If so, it’s a bug that has been reported repeatedly and, unfortunately, hasn’t been fixed yet. The latest report I could find was from December 2022:

I don’t believe I used the ‘move’ from the radial in this case because I can’t seem to move items from one level to a higher level with any luck (since the original position was 2 blocks below the tower level. I use the radial heavily for things like tiki torches, but haven’t had an issue with those disappearing.

Good to know, that means it’s a different bug. Every bit of info might (but isn’t guaranteed) help them diagnose it.

Does the place where you put your chest involve any wedges and pillars? I reported a bug, some time ago, involving incorrect stability propagation when pillars are built downwards and not snapped to any of the typical snapping points:

Yes, the repair hammer is helpful, but I don’t think this was the case since the ‘move’ bug seems more likely in this instance.

It kindof sucks since I’ve moved and removed just about everything to make it fit in my structures. IDK how to place the first time just right. Guess I’ll have to learn or risk starting over many times…

Where the chest sat was on a foundation block, 1 level off the ground.

The only thing out of the ordinary, besides finding the ‘cannot build’ message line, was that I snapped all the bottom foundation blocks to one side of my ‘square’ keep, but since I used wedges in the walls, the length didn’t come out exactly even, so I moved all the foundation blocks to snap to the other, opposite, wall. Perhaps by moving the block on which the chest sat, from one coordinate to another, before reset, gave it an ‘unstable’ rating.

Hope that makes sense. Not sure what things are called in the game.

Was the chest placed directly on the floor, or was it on top of something else?

There is a bug that sometimes causes placeables on top of placeables to not reset their decay timers.

Edit: On second thought, the event log would have said it had decayed, not lost stability. This bug does not seem applicable in this case.

Any chance you could post some screenshots of where it used to be before you moved it and where you moved it to?

ground floor, then foundation square block, chest on top.

I’m not sure I understand the difference in ‘placeables’ – are those the items, like work benches, that can be aligned vs. items like wooden bowls that are just dropped? – or are both of those considered ‘placeables’?

Things that are not building pieces. All benches, decorations, torches, etc.

Perhaps. I’ll try to snap pix with phone and upload here. Hopefully, I don’t have to go through a Imgur service, etc.

Good to know. I haven’t placed ‘items’ on top of other items, just on top of building pieces.

You’ve been on the forums long enough now, so I think the system should let you post images.

You don’t even need to use your phone. Since you’re playing on PC, you can just use the PrintScreen key while you’re in the game and looking at what you want to post, and then Alt+Tab into the forum and paste it with Ctrl+V into a post you’re writing .

Oh yeah everything has to be placed just right for me too
I don’t use the radial move command. I’ve heard of bugs with that so I’ll empty a chest completely and then return it to inventory. And then go where I want to put the chest.

And if it’s not lined up just right I’ll return it to inventory and try placing it again.

FYI the wording above might be wrong-ish now thet chests are placed with construction hammer

Good luck!

Initial position.

Final position.

Cannot build demarcation (rough line).

‘Gap’ caused by wedge shapes used in wall section.

Hope this helps to illustrate positioning.

Tried to place a large chest in the opposite corner and it ‘ate’ it – didn’t place it, just took my materials. Simply disappeared. Tried again with wooden bowls (cuz they’ll cheaper) and they too aren’t placed, but just disappear from inventory. I started with 7 bowls. Screenshot shows 5 and green ghost image of placement.

Error log to support it.
