Especially considering it’s a PURGE EXCLUSIVE priest >_>
For my one and only playthrough so far (PC, single-player/local), my initial base was just upriver from ‘The Arena’ and the tunnel that links the river loop. My first purge was Dafari there. I had set purge level to 2, as I’d read multiple sources claiming that this was the best level in order to trigger named thralls in your purges. I.e. level 2 or 3 (but 3 a bit less so) and best in the original desert map of the game, or so the advice went. Two named thralls present.
I then moved to build a much bigger, better base on the cliffs overlooking the ‘Boundry Spillway’. At first I just had some foundations and an elevator so I could get up easier, as I moved a bunch of stuff and started grinding out the vast quantities of mats I needed at a makeshift camp. I had upped the purge level to 3 and got a purge of Black Hand spawning from the savannah, with 3 or 4 named present. I can’t remember exactly as there were heaps of them for some reason, almost all level 3, especially archers turning me into a porcupine and at least one named died in the chaos, snagged a couple though.
Then as I laid more foundations and built above in the cliffs and a bit into the forest area, I got nothing but spiders. Nothing but spiders for well over a dozen purges, got really boring. I tried all different purge levels but all that changed was I got boss spiders arriving above level 5. These weren’t all that fun or challenging to fight either, they just take a lot of damage. Though they would kill all my thralls on guard there. I didn’t want to cheese it by just putting a bunch of archers on towers, but I would need to if the thrall AI isn’t improved.
These purges were a bit buggy too, sometimes I’d get the notification that a wave was attacking and none would show up, sometimes the boss wouldn’t turn up (when expected above level 5), sometimes I’d get a few waves then nothing for the rest of the half hour duration - even though the purge was still active.
Interestingly, sometimes I’d still get a wave or three spawning down below in the savannah area, trying to take out my elevator, but never any humans again, much to my disappointment.
The single exception to the spiders in probably close to twenty purges (I’d set it to be pretty frequent, hoping that the next one would have some juicy thralls dammit, as I experimented with the levels) was a purge of hyenas at level 2, which spawned at my old base for some reason. I had been spending some time there prior to this, though I was at my new base when it triggered. No clue as to why this happened but I was glad for the variety, even if it was just a bunch of hyenas that even my thralls could swat like mosquitoes.
It’s not great that one’s choice of base location (in singleplayer especially as we don’t have to worry about raids, and can go wherever we want and build to our imagination) is constrained by lack of named thrall purge spawns or avoiding getting wet indoors.
The purge is an especially important feature for single player. I’m really hoping that this… “Better randomization for Purge spawn options” …in the patch notes will go some way to giving us better variety and spreading the chance for named ones around.
The only purge I was online for:
- Level 21 or 22
- About a dozen WereHyenas (and a thrid wave of normal hyenas)
- South Desert, near the river
The WereHyenas absolutely tore through my base. I believe there was a named thrall, but I died so quick I didn’t get his name. Oh, and about halfway through the purge a Sandstorm occurred.
The only way I made it was by the help of some kind and generous Lvl60’s. Thralls were of no help.
MY every Friday turned into a Thursday purge, got hit hard by DireWolves they attack came at night so I could not tell if the named thrall was thee or not. They killed like all my archers and fighters (itll make the feeding system easier I guess)
on my server it seems the purge meter is filling up faster and faster
I’m still awaiting what will happen to my base, after the purge I got 2 days ago stopped after the first wave. My purge meter is still full…
[Update]
Welp… 5 minutes before the purge timer ended, I got the message I was getting purged by Lemurian. A single wave “appeared”, they weren’t visible from afar and suddenly started showing up after crossing my bridge.
As usual my thralls kept staring but one. One of my archer thralls was punching the air (Must have something to do with the dual wield change as they are equipped with throwing axes only). Was hilarious to watch. Sadly, it ended after the first wave The purge meter got reset at least, so that’s good. Can finally afk in peace until I refill it.
Can anyone shed any light on how the update has affected purge spawning in practice?
Only abnormality I witnessed so far, as I posted in my previous post was getting the alert of being purged 5 minutes before the server setting timer states it ends. The purge started at 10:10 pm gmt+1 and on official servers it goes between 6:00 pm till 10:00 pm.
After one wave the purge ended.
Post-patch I got a human purge at my main base. Black Hand pirates, specifically. Which came as a bit of a shock, previously I’ve had nothing but apes there. Not sure if it’s just random, or if it’s patch-related.
Of course I was in the process of dismantling my base, because I wanted to move somewhere I could get human purges (!), so I didn’t have a Wheel out (and you can’t build during purges of course).
“Thankfully” the only named spawn was an archer, I’m not sure I could’ve handled a legendary blacksmith or alchemist spawning and then potentially not taming them due to not having a wheel.
Not making that mistake again, if I do decide to move (I put the move on the backburner for now, because other than the purges I really like my current location), the last thing I’ll pull down will be the wheel.
Of course my Purge meter is broken currently (like everyone’s I guess?), so no more Purges. I can’t even spawn the Purge in singleplayer, so… hmmm!

Yes, thank you, I built an outpost there and got one Purge attack there (pre-patch) of Desperate Exiles. In that case it also only included a single named, which was an archer. Also managed a few more in the same location in my singleplayer test game, all of them were human.

So far I got:
2x Darfari - (2 different Alchemists, Carpenter and a bunch of fighter/archers)
2x Lemurian - (First one was while offline, second one was only one wave and no named)
1x Exile - (Only one wave, but got a named set priest )
Never animal purge
Interesting thread. I should probably mention that I got Khafra the Mixer (Alchemist able to craft the black & white dyes) at my Boundry Spillway base, when it was mostly just some foundations at the bottom of the waterfall, triggering a spawn of Black Hand from the savannah.
What purge level are your settings at @Rorik?

Hmm, interesting that you’re getting Darfari at that level, I didn’t know that happened.
Looks like a cool spot. I really wanted to build in the jungle but didn’t want to live with the wet-indoors bug, plus I was under the impression that the original desert area was the place to be for thrall purge action. Maybe I’ll just go StraysStayDry for my next playthrough.
I actually didn’t get a single purge for months (Since launch). I was worried it might be an issue with the area, so I built another base near the Savannah just in case, to see if i’d get any success. Still, didn’t get any purges. Then out of the blue, I got purged in my main base location (The one in op). Since then, I kept getting purged there.
With the news of the thrall hunger system, I didn’t feel like having multiple bases where I had to visit and replenish food for thralls, so I demolished the place. So far, I’ve been getting purges, and that’s cool. Hope I find a named armorer or blacksmith soon tough.
The whole purge mechanic is really mysterious. I’d love to know how it is intended to function.
Good luck getting an armorer/blacksmith. It’s really exciting getting valuable named ones from purges hey, precisely because it is so buggy and random, it’s like this miraculous opportunity when it actually happens lol. Getting Khafra was awesome. Didn’t even know how lucky I was at the time, that the dyes makers were so hard to get.
I hope Funcom fixes the purge enough so I don’t have to resort to thrall spawn farms in the future. Noilly posted some super useful info, though it just feels bad for me (personally) to do things that way. Summoning @Noilly purge wizard in hopes of any sage post-patch purge intel.
After the update my purge meter stopped moving
Wait, purges are still working for you guys? They’re busted on the (unmodded) server I play on and I’ve heard the same from several other servers.
No, they’re currently broken: meter moves glacially slow, and seems to reset even if you do manage to get a bit of progress on it - probably on server restart.
