Agree that if there is combat magic then there needs to be a balance. I do like the idea of some sort of cooldown whereby the sorcerer is exposed — the more powerful the spell, the longer the cooldown.
My concern though is that FC does seem to be challenged quite a bit when it does come to balancing anything.
It doesnt habv to be butt magic either. Maybe area affect like lightning. Cast Fire in an area, or ice, or poison, or spider web cripple. Basically temp effects etc in a small 4x4 area. Even a healing aura for clan mates and minions.
I think it must be a high risk, high reward option. Either some enchantment you apply on the weapon that will cause massive damage, but needs to be reapplied every hit or a special crippling spell that also has a serious cooldown and drains the sorceror somehow. A kill or be killed situation that can go 50/50. Hit and kill or miss and die. That would make everyone think twice before facing a sorceror one on one.
Id prefer something like area affect webbing similar to the slow in the demon spider vault, allowing it to be avoided but also making followers deadly.
Or a poison cloud emanating from the caster, affecting the caster unless he has the immune perk for example.
Someway of making fully locked in corrupted worth more.
Doesnt have to be deathrays and lightsabres.
Want i want most is the staff not to disconnect me when i try to use it.
As was argued before Sorcery was ever hinted at. Magic like that is NOT a part of Conan. It’s not high fantasy. Magic was supposed to be slower and ritualistic instead.
Using a ritual to call up a storm or raising the dead is vastly different from flinging a fireball or lightning from your fingertips.
The problem is as I answered above. People want flashy high magic spells for their PvP, when it doesn’t fit the Conan setting.
Big difference is that arrows and orbs are science, not magic. There are perfectly reasonable ways to achieve those arrows within the setting. High magic type spells just don’t fit in Conan, unless you start making stuff up that’s never mentioned in any of the books.
CodeMage is absolutely right. Magic like that has no place in Conan. PvP needs are not enough of a reason to bastardize the setting.
Conan as a setting is heavily focused on combat. The problem is it’s Swords > Sorcery. Don’t wreck the setting just to get direct damage spells added.
Well said. ^^
Won’t work unless they put some kind of defense against it, or resistance to it.
PvP team runs with several stunners, they could stunlock a victim.
This is happening now in FFXIV’s PvP, because the devs didn’t think about what they were doing. Stunlocking/Sleep/Paralysis are all spammed like crap in PvP and it’s severely annoying and broken.
Same issue as Stun. If you’re only allowed to take it from 1 source at a time, but you could easily end up with a PvP situation in getting back-to-back poisons. And with healing being absolute sh** in Conan, it would quickly mean death.
Same problem as everything else in Conan. Trying to balance too many things at the same time. And stuff getting wrecked in the process.
Would be extremely broken.
One throws out a spider-web to cripple someone, others dumping ice, fire, and poison. All from a distance.
All of that is just way too much.
On the other hand, a ritual usable at your base, that coaxed spiders into laying down a web that snared people, seems much more reasonable. It’s in line with Thulsa Doom making a snake stiffen up like an arrow. Or places where fire could erupt as a trap.
So basically you are saying there should be NO sorcery in that you don’t think it fits the setting AND it will change the current meta PVP play styles?
I understand your concern that an organized clan could overwhelm someone with a coordinated combination of spells but so what? Honestly they should have an advantage if they are able to get the numbers and coordinate effectively.
That being said, as mentioned by several of us, there need to be reasonable balance/defenses for combat sorcery be it high cost, cool downs, lack of defense, etc.
How about a spell that snuffs out all torches within a certain area around caster,
Wisps work normally.
Would be a nice partner to darkness and zombie followers
That could be cool, @2cents . You would still have health bars and auto lock, but that would scare the shit out of attackers. Suddenly all goes pitch black… and you can hear those beefy zombies coming for your brains. I could definitely stand behind this idea.
Summoning the Sandstorm would be nice.
Everyone put on your mask or you’re screwed. You do still carry a mask up in the Tundra, right?
The storm doesn’t care, summoner, allies, enemies, all scoured.
Summon Sandbeast, only works in the Sandstorm. Summoned monster is hostile and attacks everything.
Clairvoyance. See health meters thru walls and see the contents of chests before opening.
Befouled Cloud, create a zone of nasty fog that poisons and corrupts anyone inside. Also spoils food and accelerates decay by x20 rate while in the zone.
Summon Quasit, create a small monster that moves away, cackling loudly, drawing aggro with it. Explodes into a corruption cloud when slain.
Cold snap/Heat wave (separate spells, same cost/tier), temporarily shifts the temperature around caster down or up. May make an area nicer, may make it a hellscape. A higher level version may follow the caster around for the duration.
Still tinkering with how a spell to summon howling winds would work, either knock down or push back, but with an annoying noise as well.
More good ideas. Just shows that it is possible to have more “Conan like” sorcery that could be useful for combat (and other things) without the typical fireballs and laser beams. The idea of sand/snow storms and a befouled cloud is interesting.
I invite everybody to go back and re-read @erjoh’s great interactions that led to these posts by The Brythunian. This is not retconning. This is making the curtains match the drapes* in a most elegant and self-propelling way. These ideas make magic matter.
This is the spell that would be a pain for me. I use sound a lot in this game…from the grunts of PC to the NPC interactions near me. So many folks don’t get how much they give away just by sound alone.
You haven’t addressed why using summoned armor requires taking half health and stamina. When there are arguably better sets available. Accepting the high sorcery argument for a moment, it doesn’t make sense that the highest level sorceror would have the same corruption affect as the lowest.
