They didn’t. It’s grit.
If a map comes out as a “pay to play” then it will split our community between people who can pay and people who can’t. I don’t think we have a large enough player base to survive that. It will certainly do a number on the RP communicates.
My point was @Jim1771 is wrong, and Vanir armor does not boost strength. There is only DLC armor that is heavy, cold weather, strength armor.
I highly doubt that the DLC map will cost as much as a Rolls-Royce, or even an Audi. Let’s say it costs 20 dollars. How many people who have a PC or console able to run Conan Exiles, and a fast enough Internet connection to play the game, couldn’t save 20 bucks in a few weeks at most? (Remember, the game is rated 18+, so we’re talking grown-ups here.) The new map will potentially offer hundreds, or even thousands, of hours of playtime. How many other forms of entertainment can boast a comparable value for a similar price?
None at all. Games, for all their flaws, have some of the best entertainment-hours-per-dollar ratios out there.
But we never include the cost to our soul…
Are you sure you still have one
Mine is heavily leveraged. A complex Ponzi scheme.
I know its hard to see but us that have full time jobs and the extra money sometimes forget there are many who play who maybe can not afford a new map, many who can save it in a few weeks but many that just paying the power bill for the winter taps them pretty much out on their gaming cash, now I am not saying that is anyone’s problem or that Funcom will consider in to if there is a paid map but cost can factor into how people feel about expansions and dlc. What @Anglinex says is true it will split it some what be if cost of said map or for those that feel for other reason it should be free, its a hard place to be in as a company and as consumers.
I do wonder if it will not split the community and if it does how good is that for the long term of the game.
I agree with this whole heartedy, I know of games you play 79.99 for get 10 hours play time out of but still it comes down to what your current situation is and there will be some people in clans who are in that situation and it will spit them into those that have and those that have not.
Now I am not saying Funcom should not charge for their new map but as a grown up I also know there are other ways they can not split the community and still make money on new map. Really they could have it be like the horses update free then just a DLC add on like they do now that many who can at that time afford would buy easy then the community can not be split in any way and Funcom can still make money on their work as they should.
no. it should not be free. seriously. computer games are a luxury item and nothing that is absolutely necessary. if you can’t afford it then that’s the way it is. but then to expect that you get everything for free is completely off the mark. the funcom staff also has to pay bills.
a honest question: did you work for free?
i can understand the concerns, even if i am not of the same opinion. but to draw the conclusion that the map has to be free because of this is completely absurd
Valid point. But i would put my own money on that most players who are on the internet, pay electricity to run the pc/console, and eat on a daily basis have the opportunity to scrounge up 20-30 USD if they really wanted something. That is where Funcom needs to be sure what they offer is worth the purchase.
And making it free because a certain percentage ( i would bet a very low percentage) couldn’t afford the new map is not sound business. Again price point and what is offered is important, as it is not about how many can pay for it, its how many will pay for it.
This paid map dlc doesn’t make me feel very good about the future of the game.
But here is my opinion:
If the new map is only used on unique servers and is entirely unconnected to the current map, fine. I’ll see the new map as an optional expansion.
However, if the paid map is connected to the existing map. If players can move between the two maps on the same server (whether naked or fully geared) I’m done with Conan Exiles.
I can stomach a change in company policy toward dlc content if the new map is only used on new and unique servers.
I will NOT play this game again if it is connected to existing servers/maps in any way whatsoever.
Let me say that I don’t believe it’s entirely about the cash. It’s more about the perceived value of the entire experience.
Currently, it costs me nothing to keep playing Conan Exiles, so my gripes about it’s deep flaws and problems remain just that: gripes.
But they make me feel like I have to spend more money to stay competitive in the game? Well suddenly those gripes are now MAJOR issues when I consider giving them more of my money.
This is the part of the conversation people are missing. This is the undercurrent that is cutting through a lot of the player’s opinions on this matter (I think).
Conan Exiles is a messy buggy and unbalanced game, but it has a core which is fun. I’ve already bought the game, so continuing to play despite its flaws is not a problem.
Ask me to spend more money and suddenly my mind begins to calculate and nitpick everything about the game and it begins to be a very unattractive proposition.

But as I said in my topic reply here, if the new map is unique to its own servers, and is in no way connected to the existing map, I can accept it because it becomes a kind of optional expansion.
Nonone has asked for more money to be competitive yet
Hey…I have an idea. Let Funcom put out a package that will allow the modders to make a new map and let’s see what they come up with.
it’s already possible to make maps with the devkit but to be honest it’s a hell of work and I doubt that the modding community is big enough to see a mod map in the near future
and because I know this makes me really wonder why people expect stuff worth of thousands hours of work for free
It exists already. It’s called the dev kit.
Ahhh…didn’t know that you can do maps with it. Well…somebody get busy…lol.
Well, I was being facetious, but that’s a good point.
Just to throw this out there, maybe one reason is because it’s already been done by other devs and modders in various other games. Who can say for certain?
I agree, in that the map can not be something that is Pay 2 Win. I really feel like the new map is going to open new server, and server types that will address issues and put to use the knowledge they have gained over time using UE4 engine. Alex even stated that this was the first time the team used UE4, and they have learned a lot over the time on how to better use it and get more out of it, with less bugs. trying to put those “tricks” into the old program and map may become futile, thus a new map will showcase what they really can do with the engine.
