I get what you’re saying - I really do - and while I, too, would appreciate a little less chest-beating and sensationalism, it doesn’t change the fact that a large portion of our (CE RP) community prefers to play the game in a fantasy environment. One of the ways that environment is built is by highly customized races and characters.
I’ve RPd in Conan on modded and unmodded servers, using both voice and text (and a mix of both). While you absolutely can play 100% unmodded and make beautiful, interesting, engaging stories, it doesn’t change the fact that many CE RP servers are currently built around fantasy races, and that the removal of the ability to create them (or create them to the extent they can be made with a tool like ToT! Custom) is essential to their continued functioning in their current state.
They’re not exhaggerating when they say they’ll have to shut down (at least until some solution to the problem can be found or created). Many will have to adapt lore, many will have to do season wipes (because the characters are literally built in Custom, and without it they do not look like themselves). Yes, we can adapt.
We don’t want to.
We shouldn’t have to.
Or, if we do have to, we should at least be told why. It’s not an unreasonable request.
Look I understand the frustration, I was a server tech for a medium-high fantasy server that had to stay down on a couple of occasions while we waited for some mods we needed for specifics updated. It sucks, it really does. I feel really bad for those players on these servers that are in limbo and cannot update a whole suite of mods.
But at no point would the server just crumble apart and fade away if we lost even all of our mods. It would suck, it wouldn’t be fun to try and revamp the process, probably even have to wipe. But at the end of the day we were going to play, have fun, and get our RP on.
And I want to stress that I’m not saying everything will be fine. I’m not saying people don’t have a right to be angry here. Nor should everyone be going through the stress they are especially considering this is not due to a random glitch, a mishap, or anything like that, but an unknown decision. As for the reasonings behind that decision, I’m in the dark about, and I don’t have enough information to form any sort of opinion here. So all I can say is the situation sucks, and we just have to see what happens.
All I can speculate is that if it was a mistake, FC may tell us. If it wasn’t, and something deliberate… we’re not going to get an answer directly from them about it. They’re probably only going to communicate that to the affected modder. I don’t know if I agree with that stance or not, it really depends on what happened.
Thank you for understanding. It’s easy to fear the worst when the foundation for what a server is based on is no longer there. A lot of npcs, a lot of content, a lot of story arcs and server plots are at a screeching halt because of this. The physical server itself and the ability to run and maintain that and have people in a community who’ve become friends and written together for years is of course more solid than that.
But you don’t strip the main character, the setting and two chapters out of a book and then resell it at full value. It’s not as easy as being able to just login and look at your character who just lost their eyes, their extra limbs, their coloration, their hair, their clothes and be like.
“So Sally…what sandstorm did you go through?”
I’m sure that the server owners most affected are definitely brainstorming up ways to help their communities through the worst of it. If the worst comes to pass and we get no lift on the ban. But my hope is still strong that in a few days communication will happen between the mod author and Funcom and Steam Support and things will be resolved.
The game isn’t good enough to RP on without the mods. Never had been, because mechanically it’s a nightmare to deal with. The mods are what makes the game worth RPing on.
If not for the mods I’d still be RPing over on Ark. Which is where I’ll be going back to in the event we don’t get Custom back.
Removing the mod and taking away Age of Sorcery, which was the best thing about Conan and could have progressed- we are back to playing ARK.
ARK: 8,190 hrs total.
The RP is much better on Ark, if I’m honest. But I also heavily prefer voice RP, because a five minute conversation takes five minutes, not an hour. XD
Ark is bs. The theme is meh and the grafics and animations are terrible.
I would prefer playing Conan over anything Ark could ever provide. I wouldn´t even play this game with the greatest mods on.
Never undstood its popularity. You can stone me for this, won´t change my mind. Conan Exiles is hundred times better then Ark will ever be.
I love using mods. I have a modded server with my fiance and I build a castle/city there. But we try to stay close to the Conan theme because otherwhise it wouldn´t feel like playing Conan anymore. If I would like to play fairy tale games I would buy one. I have some Rp experience, played on hardcore GTA roleplay server for a while. I am used to using mods in games. I play Project Zomboid modded and also have a modded 7 Days to Die server and there I even run my own mods.
But I feel that a mod should aim to complete a game not taking it completely over or taking it in a direction that has nothing to do with the games theme anymore. I am not say this about the tot mod but in general. And I have seen a lot of modders going too crazy with their mods lately. Elf ears, pink wings and high heal mods leave me shaking my head.
I think that there are more then one customization mods out there. I use IQL and Edit Appearance and that does the job just fine. I am not saying the tot mod is not apprechiated but if Funcom had this mod removed they must have done something. Otherwhise they would have removed the other custom mods too.
Here are some of the models that you can create with Tot Custom, models that you cannot achieve with the Base Game’s Character Creation. Tot Custom adds so much to the game for creativity for those that want the RP experience. I for one vastly enjoy the game with Tot Custom more than without. Now that is not anything against the vanilla game or the work you guys put into it, but it’s the truth for the RP communities, without Tot Custom, a vast amount of RP communities may not be able to continue. But that part, is more my opinion than what may or may not actually be accurate.
