Funcom pls talk to us

Iggy said on the Dune discord yesterday that Andy was impacted by the recent lay offs. :frowning: I think there are only two CMs left.

Nothing like taking the face of the company interactions with the community for 5 years plus and discarding him. That’s a great way to ensure player engagement continues.

Yeah, it looks like Andrew Tsuyoshi Benditt is no longer at Funcom.

Are we entirely sure Funcom is enthusiastic about engaging with the community?

This one hasn’t sniffed around the Dune discord in awhile. How are things over there? It once had quite a bit of interaction, but this one understands there was some roughness shortly after roll out?

Regardless, this one will pour a drink for lost Andy.
Umeshu this evening.

Funcom is closing Metal Hellsinger studio The Outsiders | GamesIndustry.biz
i have looked at so maybe websites and see how people have left the funcom since 2 weeks ago.

Just for the record:

  1. First, they changed the interval between updates from 3 to 6 months.
  2. After one “age,” there is another change, but they have not specified a time frame (I agree with the speculation that the game coding is in such a state that they have no idea when it might work).

Read the title of this topic again—I couldn’t agree more.
Communication has never been Funcom’s strong suit, but after the transition to “Age of Bugfixes,” they took it to the next level—it simply doesn’t exist.
That’s what’s being discussed here, not how many weeks have passed between patches.

By the way, I also play X4 Foundation, which is a game about the same age as CE but with a completely different approach from the developers.
Constant development through paid and free DLC.
Each patch has several public tests - where the findings from previous ones are applied (unlike FC, where we have a buggy beta test and the same version with known bugs goes live).
Hotfixes are a matter of days, not months or more…

I’m not sure since I’m console so Dune is something I am not even considering until next year.

However FC using copywrite to limit content creators is very telling on how their views of community has changed the last 8 years.

:brazil:  Conan Exiles

i have seing people playing this game and their is still people playing it

i like the dune game, i think its a great game

I have zero sympathy or concern for anybody that got axed. They were most likely part of the problem.

The main difference between X4 Foundations and Conan Exiles is that the X4 Foundations team knows what they are doing. Funcom hired some pretendoids, like Andy, and now they are getting rid of them because the impact of having incompetent staff is showing up in their bottom line.

Maybe they were part of the problem, maybe they were not. Let us give them the benefit of the doubt.

Personally, I believe there’s a lot of talent in the Funcom / Conan Exiles team. Lots of stuff they do is pretty inspired. The lack of quality control, the unreliable schedule and monetary issues are something to blame management for, not the “grunts”, uhm, artists and programmers, doing the work.

To pick a random example: If the CE team would decide to add Telith’s Ghost, they’d most likely do a good job at it. Thing is, they’re probably busy filing that TPS report, and cannot do the job they and we would like them to do.

Yes, there is a lot of talent at Funcom and Conan Exiles is proof of it, but that same talent is not the incompetence that we have also seen. I’ve never been subscribed to the “benefit of the doubt” idea or concept, but I know that companies don’t get rid of their top/best talent when the bottom line is in focus. I think they are shaking the trees to get rid of people that don’t fit their future plans. It takes time to solve problems also. Conan Exiles is my favorite game of all time.

we need to see how this gonna impact conan exiles if its gonna go the good way or the bad way we dont know, this will take time to find out, maybe we getting something to know in the letter frome funcom if they gonna do it in januar,

but it is concerning

I cannot agree more especially to these two. And they are not accusations, they are constructive criticism.

Now when it comes to Andy and accusing him for not being competent i can only disagree. And i will declare that it hurts me when members accusing him for literally anything. I believe that no other admin in this forum has given what Andy gave. So please @darkpower

Although i respect feedback and criticism, allow me to disagree vertically here. Andy is the least a good friend.

Actually, they do. I’ve seen the better engineers get laid off a lot. Often management just doesn’t know who is actually doing what. Often they would rather have more people work for cheaper prices than have fewer better engineers (outsourcing model). And often the good engineers raise a stink about needing to fix technical debt and management just gets tired of hearing it and would rather have a dumber and more compliant workforce.

I see what you are saying but a dumber and more compliant workforce works against the bottom line (money) with any company in any industry. Incompetent people are a liability, not a strength. Thus, when companies hire against their best interests, we see the outcome as diminished quality, poor operations, and multiple problems. Look at all of the woke studios and games that have failed.

Id like to know if tickets are still a thing or fodder for campfires ..

I agree. But the problem is that a lot of management is too far removed to really understand who is worth it and who isn’t. They’re just looking at numbers on a spreadsheet. When I see it happen, I usually leave the company and watch it struggle for a while. Eventually, new management comes in with a new plan and they rehire better people. But by then, the other managers have already left and are now doing the same disservice to another shop. Wait long enough, and you’ll see multiple cycles of it. And, they seem to be clueless about how much money and opportunity it all costs them.
