I’ve been asked in private to explain what I mean about PS4 and PC. Personally I would be amenable to PS4 Private Servers, and more open to their “co-play” administration because the PlayStation does not support Mods. Mods make it somewhat harder to hold an Admin’s feet to the fire on PC, as they can easily cover their tracks with pruning operations and cron jobs.
With Vanilla Official, you get what you get, as Funcom intended. This is much different now than it was when a lot of us started. We were offered a PvP experience, which I would never have participated in were it not for Official (Public) Servers. I would have gone to Rust.
One final note, I’m sorry to have clouded your thread, @darthphysicist. It is beneath @Jimbo to retroactively change his post to say mean things about me. It is underhanded. This is what I hope to avoid in an Admin. I think I’ll make a video about it, and this phenomenon.
What if a server only ran mods without those features? For example, lets say a pvp server was setup without Pippi (sacrilege I know) and only ran weather and survival mods to make it more intense theoretically? It makes policing bad behavior more difficult sure, but would that peak your interest? The policing is on the admin afterall so they would he adding more work for themselves but they wouldnt have access to build maps and so forth; they’d have to fly around and check spots manually for reported that infractions.
This can be verified by players from my most recent hired PvP server, even seemingly innocuous mods can cause issues with how the server does its thing. One host had a problem where a QOL Mod made elevators and other placeables impossible to pickup. Another other host had it all worked out, but then we had a patch where two mods were down for two days. It’s been a hardship.
The other silly problem is almost every PvP Private is way up on harvesting 3X and XP 2X+. That’s crummy.
Oh sorry! Edit. Only one player has ever asked for Pippi during my time(s) as a game server host.
Yup, more than one mod and I leave the server - myself! And so far those modded servers I’ve been on haven’t used Pippi - thank goodness! Pippi is like 20 mods in one package… Nope!
I love Pippi and I especially admire the Pippi Team. There are really great mods out there, by @Multigun to name one, that expand the game and show us how it’s done. But Pippi is like an App.
One day when I’m out to pasture I’ll run a PvE Server with Pippi on it. I have this on my Gameplay Experience bucket lists. There I’d have no problem playing as Admin.
same here. Many of the mods are awesome…as standalone. Ince mods start stacking you get everythong but the base game to be honest, which is what i want to play.
As far as pippi, there are some really useful admin tools for checking heta signatures etc. Some of these i asked for as a console private server owner feom FC, bit some (@Jimbo ) on here have basically said not ask FC to put in work to help with base game stuff, and to kust use privates and mods to get what we want.
I can’t really bring him into it right now, but another player and yet another that you might remember helped me with this significantly. This is irrespective of the zero health bug, and yet again another reason why Adminning a server is a bad idea. Edit: I also have a few threads here dealing with it, including one possible solution that had to do with Xeon-based hardware and floating point errors.
It occurred because there was a change made to the database that corrupted it. When we moved to the new server, none of it was a problem anymore. Right after that there was a game patch that caused two of the mods to be unsupported for two days.
Well I could do it proactively as well if you’d rather. I wouldn’t consider it “mean things” unless you want me to necro some now-locked threads of you saying equally “mean things” to me. Respect is earned, not freely given.
You also still haven’t addressed the message I’m trying to impart. You’re more concerned with trashtalking a third of the playerbase for their console preference, and nit-picking my use of formatting.
This is what we are in agreement of. Asking them to change things that could be changed in a private server is where the base flaw in the logic comes in. Thus, the point of this thread.
Not too late to move. I didn’t buy this game for the pvp. Since launch I’ve been more into it for the pve. I played pvp for a run but never got much enjoyment out of it.
It’s not for everyone, and it’s a baseless assumption to pretend everyone is here for pvp. Just because you and your echo chamber posse are doesn’t define the larger community as a whole.
You don’t speak for everyone. You speak for a very small, very vocal circle.
Too lazy to make a second post so:
Don’t put words in my mouth. You’re not asking for QOL additions for everyone, you’re asking for catering to your specific wants. FC can put in the work for the game, so that admins can put in the work for their server. The problem, toxic as it is, is that people want the game itself to bend to fit what they want on an official server instead of moving.
Hate mounts? Lock the feat on your private server.
Building damage needs rebalance? Sliders.
Build rules? Admin’s discretion.
You and I have entirely different memories of this,
I don’t recall any trouble with the mods I personally chose for that server, as a former moder myself the mods I chose didn’t include anything that would break from an update.
The way I remember it I left the server because you removed all the mods when they made one player “uneasy”
To verify this you have but to look in the saved DM conversations between you and I from that time.
Well certainly we have different memories of this. But you’re trying to tell me what I did and didn’t go through as an Admin, that’s a bit much. I made a poor choice in my rental host, and we all paid the price for it, because any mod at all did it to the database. This was proven, and very much documented.
By the time we got to the second server we’d lost half the players. But I worked hard to build back up, and I even manually cleaned the database to correct the tables that had been corrupted. Right then, one player and his clan were having some doubts about staying. They didn’t want mods to trigger this again, even though it was and only ever was the host. So since they were three and playing actively, I erred on the side of keeping mods away.
If anyone else is exhausted by this, just imagine if I’d actually played on the server other than to test and build welcome centers.
No I am not talking about anything you went through as an admin,
I’m talking the MODS alone.
I was at that time and for a long time after using those very mods.
They were never a problem, unless you are confusing a different server, because you often reference multiple times you have been admin.
I was only ever on one server you hosted, and I left because you removed the mods for no reason.
Right. That time was the time I spent good cash on a rented host. Two, in fact.
The mods, any mods, I ran on that specific server host caused a permanent problem with the database. It took extensive work, juggling and late nights so that you and the rest of the players could not see what was happening. Maybe it’s a credit to me then.
It was all migrated over, and working quite well. And then we had the Big Patch. And the mods had to be disabled for two whole days. That sucked.
If I (my humble self) were to open a pvp server, it would have very few mods just to keep things like you mention from happening. A few or one to set the mood (not gonna lie, drachenfeles severe weather for sure) to keep the load light and to keep the server up maximally with minimal room for down server time. The settings would be barbaric and people would be left to destroy, in so far as they weren’t doing things that were blatant cheats. I dont understand why people bloat rates honestly… pvp the way I see it should be punishing and I think it should come from all sides; game world and other players.
I have different memories
Just last week I mentioned the server I played on that am remembering,
you said then it was in the office of your business.
not one you spent money on.
I am in too much pain today to continue this conversation, at this time.
Another thing about privates, it was once told on a thread that FC looks at how the game is played on privates, and uses that as part of the gauge on what officials should be based on. I believe a dynamic build damage thread. Since most privates had it turned off, they had decided it was not a high priority to be turned on for officials.
Using that, most privates have a stated hard build cao, and use pippi on pc to check it. Also most have an admin monitored offline protextiin system. So officials should have hard building cap and offline protection. Which pvp wise would allow for off8cials to play like holy privates.
The other thing is I value Dro’s opinion, and I was very hesitant to tell him what I had been through. I wanted to run it vanilla but listened to his advice, however eschewed Pippi. These were great QOL Mods.
As a good friend should, I didn’t want Dro to know a lot about this, so I troubleshot with my very pragmatic Clanmate and a new Russian player who came in from the rain. I thought, at the time, he’d feel bad for suggesting Mods. When it turns out it was ANY Mods with that host.
I think it would’ve been a lot cloudier if I’d been playing too.
