Do NOT nerf the Sword of Crom again!

The Sword of Crom was added to Conan Exiles in 2019, after I, along with the support of other likeminded members tirelessly poured over a year worth of our time and creative energy into research and advocacy. The crux of our argument was that players loyal to mighty Crom should have a handful of Crom related items we can use in the game we love as 1) unlike the other religions it was devoid of Crom items at the time, and 2) those who felt their primary alignment lay with Crom, lacked any such items to display and roleplay their loyalty and allegiance to him. So in 2019 after well over a year of researching and posting Crom lore in my [thread], our calls were graciously acknowledged, and the warriors of Crom were given the Sword of Crom to carry into battle with them. I still carry it mine with me almost everywhere to this day.

So at the time of its inception, here were its starting values:

  • 121 damage
  • 13% armor penetration
  • 2,400 durability
  • the trade off was it had an instant 100% stamina drain with each swing

Then came the inneviatable chorus of nerf criers. Which have seen it weakened time and again, to the point it will now be even weaker that the Mastodon Killer (84 damage, 22.5 armor penetration & 3,600 durability) if this nerf proceeds. Now let us compare the former iteration of the Sword of Crom to the current testlive version

  • 78 damage
  • 20% armor penetration (yeah whopdee do)
  • 450 durability

Moreover, for the sake of context, the Sword of Crom launched was under the old Attribute system, where players maximum health pool was only 600 as opposed to the current 735 and there was no Godbreaker armors. Heck put on a set of Sobek armor and players are now sitting at 935 hp without buffs.

So, players now have 1) higher health pools, 2) better armors, and 3) an already weaker Sword of Crom, and the vocal minority are STILL crying about! It will never end, at some point people need to harden up and learn to adapt. The only way to break this vicious cycle is for you, the good folks at Funcom to put a stop to it. Next we would see its damage reduced by 25%(!) down to 91, see it removed as a useable weapon for thralls entirely, see its durability nerfed down to a pitiful 450 (less than an iron greatsword at 600), and now the current Chapter 4 testlive has its damage nerfed even further down to meager 78. This change will utterly destroy its viability.

It is preposterous. It is the Sword of Crom for goodness sake, not the sword of flowers, not some hello kitty memorabillia, and the Sword of Crom should embody its namesake (a gloomy savage barbarian god) and strike with the same ferocity as the Dark Lord of the Mound himself. Not like a soggy noodle, or a moisture logged bundle of shredded newspaper.

So what do I want to see happen? I would urge, plead and beckon Funcom and @den to not go through with it, abandon this nerf, and do NOT add it to the live version of the game.

#Justice & a fair go for Crom and his faithful followers.

For CROM!! :mountain_snow: :metal:

Just wanted to point out that even though this is better than what SoC started with, it’s a nerf from its current value in live. If the wiki is right, the current armor pen of SoC is 22.5%

Apparently, Crom is nowhere near as powerful as Hanuman. Or at least, that’s what the weapon stats would lead you to believe, since Hanuman’s Gada does a whopping 96 damage on light attack. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s a two-handed hammer and not a two-handed sword, and I know it weighs a ton, but it’s still rather ridiculous…

Good luck! It generally takes a lot bigger outcry – like their first iteration of momentum-based movement – to make them reconsider a change, but there’s a first time for everything. Who knows, maybe this is where they start being a bit more receptive to community feedback.

I always thought it should be 200 damage with 100% armor pen but 10 durability minus 1 for every priest thrall you ever had. Meaning you get 10 hits and that’s it and less if you played around with other religions

To be entirely fair, weapon stats seem more fluid than combat systems. Requests for buffs and nerfs are not necessarily forlorn hopes. This asking for a reexamining of the specific balancing on a specific weapon is not unreasonable.

In this one’s estimation, the Sword of Crom should be the highest damage Greatsword (if not weapon) in the game.

This own also feels that it should be on the heavier, and especially, higher durability side.
A stamina surcharge for using such a mighty weapon is perfectly reasonable.
It is mighty, but it puts great demands upon any who would try to use it.
It should be a weapon only for the most enduring and resilient of warriors.

Making it weak, fragile, and easy to use is an abomination.

There are far better weapons for the easy to use (cost less stamina/attack) effect.
For example, the weightless weapons, the Lig-, er Greatsabre, these would make sense.
From a balancing point of view, giving the trait to weapons that lack any nifty trait and are just a stat stick would be good.
But putting it on a corrupting weapon would help ease the sting and make that tool very useful to those who corrupt their stats.

This is perhaps another example of an attempt to carry the problem (one shot out of rolling thrust spam) has been over corrected.
The Rolling Thrust and Stamina Regen nerf effectively snipped this.
The change to the Sword of Crom, which (due to extreme fragility) make it basically a stick one uses a couple times then hands off to a thrall, are somewhat out of proportion, but also sap the novelty of the weapon and erode it’s value. Painful considering the efforts invested to get it included in the first place.

First of all, I’ll say that I do not think the sword should be nerfed, but my reason is solely because it takes away what makes it unique, not because of anything to do with Crom.

The Sword as it currently exists in the live version is too overpowered for allowing thralls to use it, so I do not support keeping the current stats while enabling its use for thralls. However, the same is true for any weapon that has an increased stamina cost modifier, like Momentum. To be clear though, I am not saying thralls should never be allowed to use these weapons, rather that thralls should not be able to use them without also suffering some sort of penalty like a player using them would. I offered a suggestion on resolving that before.

The Sword of Crom is named after Crom, that is it. Crom had no part in its construction or function. Hanuman’s Gada supposedly was used by Gada personally.

Crom is not opposed to the worship of other gods, he is opposed to people praying to him specifically. Crom’s gift to humanity is provided at birth, so petitioning him for anything is insulting him, as you are effectively telling him that his gift was not good enough and you want more.

A further point that I would add is that the Sword of Crom is (and seemingly remains) an incredibly rare drop. I have killed that group of UC bosses many many hundreds of times, I have still never seen the Sword of Crom actually drop (the only time I’ve ever had access to it was in an Age of Calamitous playthrough, where you can flat out buy it, and it doesn’t matter because AoC has its own tiers of even stronger weapons). Something that is so rare and hard to obtain, and that is dedicated to Crom, should be meaningful when you finally do find it.

Until recently, I thought this sword had the lowest drop rate among the skeleton boss legendaries, since I only got it once in three years.
But a week ago, it finally dropped out in the current game, and almost the next day I got it again, and the next day - again.
I’m now convinced that all legendary items from UC skeleton boss loot have the same chance of spawning.
Oh, and about damage: right now the SoC has 100/120 damage, which means it remains the most powerful vanilla weapon for now.

I’m glad it’s dropping for you (I’m still not finding it, lol, but luck is luck…). As for the damage - its current stats in the live game are fine - this thread is because it is being weakened in the new testlive/public beta to the stats listed in Croms_Faithful’s opening post and will no longer be even a shadow of its former self, which many of us think should not happen.

The drop rate for the Sword of Crom is the same as every other legendary dropped by the humanoid undead bosses in the Unnamed City.

However, people may get the impression that the Sword of Crom is rarer due to comparing it to the rarity of other Unnamed City legendaries, like the Predatory Blade, for example.

The chance for the Brute to drop a legendary is 30%, the same as a humanoid undead boss’s chance to drop a legendary, however, the humanoid undead bosses have a large number of legandaries in their loot pool to choose from, so any one of them has a lower drop rate.

So, despite all Unnamed City bosses having the same 30% chance to drop a legendary, the odds to get the Predatory Blade specifically is 7.5% while the odds to get the Sword of Crom specifically is 1.3%.

Happy for you to point out any oversights mate! Yeah it is a nerf from its current state as you noted. Which is whis why I inserted my sarcastic whopdeedo.

This I did not realise, thankyou for calling my attwntion to it. There will be a lot of overlap between points and responses I make to both yourself and also Tephra. And there could be a number of sore points here as far as nitpicking goes, so I will do my best to remain objective. While Hanuman’s Gada is an actual religious item by origin, so are any of the other shrine items. Whereas the Sword of Crom is forged by a mortal man. But…from a mechanics perspective, the SoCs trade off as far as stamina drain means it should have the higher damage rating, as part of the risk to reward coefficient. The Sword is the heaviest hitter in the game, but it also has the heaviest stamina drain in the game which leaves the attacker vulnerable after missing their blow. This is the thing which makes the sword unique, and in my eyes so fun to use. And I feel it would be a tremendous shame if this was lost to the playerbase forever.

Thankyou CodeMage, I really mean it. I am not going to be negative toward Funcom here and now, as it will not help the Sword of Crom’s situation. But I am also realistic enough to concede the chips are stacked against me. I am however, going to appeal to their better nature and try to put illustrate that the nerf was not something the wider community wanted, just a small vocal minority. In addition to pleading that this wonderdul, unique mechanic should remain in the game.

Wow an excellent start. A big thankyou to all who have supported thus far. I will do my best to overcome my overbearing work demands and give all who posted a reply. Even if only a short one. Crom may not give a s***, but I have nothing but gratitude for your support.

While I am a follower of Mitra, I respect the beliefs of my Cimmerian warriors and agree that the top tool for dismantling enemies should be the Sword of Crom.

I am opposed to all of these nerfs to he honest. And this one makes even less sense than most. There is absolutely no reason to nerf the Sword of Crom!

But, I’ve said it years ago and I’ll say it again. @ Funcom. If you are going to nerf weapons constantly (and horribly every ****ing time), there is only one solution left. MAKE EVERY WEAPON DEAL 1 BLOODY DAMAGE AND BE DONE WITH IT ALL!

It’s not like it use to be. Now almost every boss you kill in the unnamed city drops something. Especially Red Mother always drop something, it’s rare not to drop. So since i saw tgis change in the age of war update i did this…

But as you said very correctly…

That’s 100 % correct!
The session i finished yesterday which was 2h axe only and only 2 thralls on exile lands, wasn’t lucky. It wasn’t lucky because the only legendary 2h axe on exile lands is Thag scythe. Normally i get this weapon really easy.
Well, i had to visit 13 times to get it, i even got a pristine weapon on one visit, but in this session this axe gave me trouble.

My original position stands strong about sword of Crom.
I don’t like the news, i hate them, but i cannot understand the changes until i play with them.

My god yeah…

The chapter after this Chapter they are going to remove it if they continue the nerfs…
